Trebein Elementary Science Fair Guidelines

1. Superior science projects use the scientific method. An explanation of the scientific method is included in this packet.

2. Third, fourth, and fifth grade students may do their project individually or be in a team of two. This year the science fair will be held on one day for fourth and fifth graders and the next day for third graders. Teams of two must be in the same grade. All students will present their projects to judges and be evaluated individually.

3. All projects should be developed and completed by the students. Students should be prepared to share what they have learned to the judges. Performing experiments for the judges is not mandatory.

4. Each project will be judged on

Knowledge achieved

Use of scientific method

Originality and creativity

Clarity of expression

5. Each student must complete an entry form and submit it by Thursday, April 17, 2025. Each student must complete an entry form in order to receive a certificate even if their partner has already submitted one. Please remember to put your name, grade, and teacher name on your display board.

6. Have Fun!

How do I do a Science Project?

Follow the scientific method which includes:

  1. Decide on a question or problem you want to solve. For example you might ask “What would happen if…….?” or “How many ways can we …..?” (No demonstrations)

  • Research the question. This is when you look for information about the question in books, websites, and other sources. Document your references.

  • Make a hypothesis (prediction) about the answer to the question. You will make an educated “guess” about what you think the answer to your question will be.

  • Experiment: Decide how to test your hypothesis. This means you have to design a test to help you answer your question and describe the steps you do to achieve this. Include a list of Materials and write out the Procedure you will follow, step by step, to answer your question.

  • Observations: Collect the data from repeated trials.

  • Present data in a chart or graph.

  • Draw a conclusion by analyzing data and answering the question. Compare your hypothesis to your observations and comment on how these findings are important to you.
