Literacy!

  • The district uses the Fundations Program for phonics and spelling instruction. This program is a recognized leader in multisensory, structured language. It integrates word study, spelling, and phonics into a cohesive curriculum.

  • This is the same program that is used in Kindergarten and 1st grade.

  • Students will learn to decode longer and more complex words by recognizing phonics patterns that include glued sounds, suffixes, multisyllable and compound words, and the following 5 syllable types: closed, open, vowel-consonant-e, r-controlled, and double vowel.

Odds and Ends

  • Digital (???) report cards are issued on a trimester basis and are discussed in greater detail at conference time.

  • Field Trips: We’re trying to revamp and brainstorm some new ideas, but we will have a field trip this year as well as some enrichment activities thanks to the PTO!

  • PTO Directory sign-up sheet in the classrooms.

  • Practice shoe tying at home please!

  • Please label everything!! Especially snow gear!

  • Students should not bring toys to school in their backpack. Toys can easily be lost or broken and this helps us avoid any conflicts. Extended day rules may differ.

  • Social/Emotional development in second grade places a lot of emphasis into cooperation, empathy, problem solving, responsibility, and self-control.

  • There is no homework in 2nd grade - we just ask that you please have your child read 20 minutes a day.
