Program Background

Go Green Initiative (GGI) partnership supports the District to achieve compliance with California legislation for recycling, composting, and reducing waste.

100% of Green Teams Re-established

  • GGI re-established and retrained Green Teams at all 15 school sites.
  • Teams educated campus community, identified needs & implemented initiatives for the reduction and diversion of waste.
  • Active participation of 17 school administrators, 20 custodians, 35 teachers, and more than 300 students.

District Green Team Engagement & Continuity

  • All school teams were guided and supported by GGI & District Green Team.
  • Accountability structure for compliance across departments and facilities.
  • Consistent participation by: Business Services, Teaching & Learning, Student Support Services, Operations, Custodial Services, Communications & Community Relations, Child Nutrition Services, and Purchasing.

School Waste Tracking - Quantitative Measures

  • Waste tracking by Green Teams allows District to measure greenhouse gas emissions, track diversion rates, identify needs and opportunities & evaluate program success.
  • 12 schools tracked waste & 9 schools obtained consistent body of data.
  • Future applications:
    • savings on waste hauling service
    • right-sizing service needs
    • quantifying greenhouse gas emissions
    • documenting compliance success

$6,400 Direct Funding

to Schools

  • Schools that tracked waste consistently during any of 3 reporting periods were awarded direct funding from the GGI.
  • Funds optimized program outcomes. Uses included:
    • purchasing of specialized equipment
    • celebrating student and staff contributors
    • development of school-wide campaigns and incentives

Utility Analysis & Reduction Reports Completed

  • GGI tracked PUSD energy, water, and waste in Energy Star Portfolio Manager.
  • Data for 2021-2022 analyzed in Utility Analysis & Reduction Report.
  • Key updates in 2022-23 school year:
    • Energy: 14/15 facilities highly efficient and could qualify for Energy Star Certification.
    • Water: water use savings at majority of facilities in 2022 ($42,460.37 in savings).
    • Waste: school waste data & hauler service records in analysis by GGI.

Teacher Grant Program for Environmental Literacy Expanded

  • GGI awarded 26 teachers a total of $5,200.00 for environmental literacy and sustainability lessons.
  • Awardees represented all grade levels and 12 PUSD schools, as well as a wide range of subject areas.
  • Resources available to teachers: Environmental Literacy & Sustainability Lessons
  • Remaining $9,400.00 in funds for eligible teachers.

Student Leadership Activated & Strengthened

  • All Green Teams maintained student leadership participation.
  • Student-led bin monitoring programs achieved clean waste streams by eliminating contamination.
  • Schools with highly effective bin monitoring programs resulting in clean compost and recycling streams included Hearst, Mohr, and Valley View Elementary Schools.

High School Student Mentorship & Leadership

  • Local Leaders of the 21st Century Clubs at Amador and Foothill were integrated into the district’s compliance work.
  • HS students provided lessons on waste sorting and bin monitoring at elementary schools.
  • Students led community workshops, visits to Materials Recovery Facility, and disseminated info at community events.
  • 7 graduating seniors were awarded scholarships by the GGI.
