Mountain tops and deep dark valleys
Are both part of life we know;
Disappointments and achievements
Each arrive to help us grow;
Patience calms us; love inspires us;
Meet the challenge as we go.
Aimless drifting raises questions,
What’s the purpose? Where’s our place?
Like the stairs that lead to nowhere,
Clocks that have no hands or face,
Is there meaning in our struggles?
Is there worth in acts of grace?
Status, wealth and power always
Promise what they cannot give;
Self-indulgence brings no purpose
To a life that we might live;
Such a life leads to a posture -
Not to love nor to forgive.
If we look to Jesus’ message,
If we look deep in our soul,
We will know and feel empowered,
And some answers may unfold
When we recognize that ‘others’
Give life meaning; make us whole.
‘Others’ can be friends or strangers
Family, neighbours, those in need;
Those who help us, those who love us,
Those we teach and those we heed;
‘Others’ are God’s gift to cherish,
Give us purpose; Life indeed!
