Basic psychological needs

Sometimes our choice to connect with certain people or groups is driven by our own basic psychological needs. Choice Theory suggests there are five needs:

  1. Survival: what you need to sustain life, as well as a sense of safety and security
  2. Love & belonging: the need to be connected to others
  3. Power: the need to be your best, to matter, to leave a legacy, to have an impact, to be competent
  4. Freedom: the ability to do what you want, when you want, without restrictions
  5. Fun: play, relaxation and meaningful, relevant learning

What have we learned about what drives our choices?

Today we have seen:

How Ella’s state of mind, and her basic psychological needs, pulled her into a situation almost unwittingly.

Ordinarily, this is unlikely to lead to anything too serious but over the coming weeks we will see how such a situation could escalate and why it’s therefore important to have some understanding of our own psychological states and how they can impact our decision-making.
