#100 Days of Mind Monsters

Worrywart spends every moment dissecting my ideas and worrying about what others might think of them. He runs around my mind frantically, questioning every decision I make, leaving both our heads spinning.

Inadequasaurus is always curled up right in the middle of my head. I can feel him trembling as I read over job descriptions and attempt to write cover letters. His multiplying neon spots are constant reminders of my inadequacies.

Peeve is a temperamental little stinker. He’s usually asleep on the ground floor of my mind, but when he feels I’ve been wronged or upset in even the slightest of ways, he wakes up screaming and runs around like a maniac. Peeve gets so worked up about things that he tends to make me feel more irritated than I probably should.

Brainado is an angry tornado monster that throws my mind into complete chaos. He likes to make me think I don’t have control over anything and that I’m not strong enough to do anything on my own. I often feel like there is no escape from Branado’s destruction, but I have to remind myself that it’s all in my head.

Key Point: Introduce people to the creative idea of mind monsters. Everyone has their personal demons that show up as little mind monsters. We need to befriend the monsters in our heads as a way to address our destructive thinking patterns.

This idea is based on work by Sara Spark’s #100daysofmindmonsters. Sara is a graphic designer and this is some of her work from The 100 Day Project, an annual global art challenge where anyone can choose a creative project, do it every day for 100 days, and share their process online. Sara’s project was on how to befriend the monsters in your head.

This framing of mind monsters is a great way to look deeper than words like imposter syndrome to find out within ourselves what’s really the source of limiting beliefs or causing our destructive thinking patterns.
