GOAL 1: Research

Intro video

Choice A:

“Genealogy and Family History”

- Open the first link: “How to begin …”

- In Before you start review each of the bullet points.

- In Search tips review each of the bullet points in the General, Names, and Places sections.

“FS: Canada Record Finder”

- Browse the Record Finder and discuss the categories of records and which to use for different objectives.

“MH Wiki: Canadian Surnames”

- Scroll down to Tips for Researching …Summarize the first paragraph for the value of archives in surname research. Summarize the second paragraph for the value of using surname maps.

- In Top 5 Surnames … click the first link in Newfoundland and Labrador to show MyHeritage resources for that surname. (Mention that other platforms such as FamilySearch and Ancestry also have surname tools.) Then scroll through the headings for the rest of the provinces and territories.

“FS: Name Variations …”

- In Introduction review the bullet list for reasons why name searches in records may not get the desired results.

- In the Step 1 table, review each of the entries in the left column, beginning with “Initials or abbreviations” and briefly explain the examples in the right column.

Choice B:

“TH: Top Databases and Websites”

- Briefly describe each of the 10 resources for Canadian genealogy listed in the article (bold heading links).

“FS: How to recognize …”

- Summarize each of the 5 Steps in the article, emphasizing the bullet points. Refer briefly to the example notes for context.

- In Tip 1 review the bullet points for timeline suggestions.

- In Tip 2 review each of the question items for clues to identifying an ancestor.

GOAL 2: Vital Records

Choice A:

“FS: Canada Vital Records”

- In Introduction summarize the second paragraph to discuss where Canadian vital records are created. Then summarize the third paragraph for tips the info needed to locate vital records.

- In Historical Background … briefly review each of the paragraphs to set the historical context for vital records in Canada.

- In Contents of Vital Records, briefly review the bullet points in the Births, Marriages, and Deaths sections.

- In Research Strategies, mention that the tips and strategies in this section are basic approaches that can be used in many types of research, not just for Canadian vital records.

Practice Exercise (after Choice C)

- Open the main link for Record Search Practice and read the problem statement. Mention that learners can click the Hints link if necessary but should not click the Answers link. Tell the learners they have (x) minutes to find the answers. Then read the answers at the end of the time.

- In Introduction, summarize the paragraph that begins with “Cemetery records” to discuss the types of information found on gravestones or cemetery records.

- Summarize the paragraph that begins with “Unfortunately” to discuss the value of sexton’s records.
