Staff Directions:

  1. You will have 1-2 volunteer/extra adults (click HERE to see who signed up)

  • You will receive a kit of materials (see slide 2) + students will need scissors/marker box.

  • Divide your class into two groups (A + B). This is important because we don’t have enough materials for all kids to start with the same part of the project.

Group A: Start with the background

    • Materials for Group A: chalk, black oil pastels (for birch trees)

Group B: Starts with making/designing the cardinal.

    • Materials for Group B: precut cardinal or cardinal template or red construction paper to draw your own cardinal

Materials in the Box:

  • White paper - 1 per student + extras
  • Cardinal “Stuff” (varies per grade level) Red paper or precut cardinals
  • Brown and Black oil pastels
  • Sidewalk chalk
  • Glue Bottle
  • Glitter in bowl
  • Feathers
  • The box itself-please use to contain the glitter (as much as you can)

Group A:

  1. Use sidewalk chalk to shade your background.

  • Use oil pastels or your marker box
  • to add details to the cardinal.
    1. Beak
    2. Eyes
    3. Wings
    4. Tail

OPTIONAL

  • Add 1-2 craft feathers.

  • Add glitter.

Group B: Grades 2-4

  • Make the body of the cardinal.
    • There are cardinal template to trace or red construction paper to draw your own cardinal. (Drawing Instructions Slide 9)
  • Use oil pastels or your marker box to add details to the cardinal.

  • Add 1-2 craft feathers.

Final Steps

  • Pick a good spot for your bird on the paper.
  • Glue the bird on the paper.
  • Share with your classmates and the author.
  • Display on locker.
