Student Expectations

Homework- The district has made some recent changes to homework to allow students to have a healthy balance of school and home life. Students will be given a choice board where they have the flexibility to complete at least 4 boxes per week. The choice board will be sent home on Mondays and they will have 2 weeks worth of options. After the 2 weeks, students will hand in their work. Homework will start Monday, September 16th.

Computer Information

Chromebooks are 1:1 and will be kept in the classroom.

Each student will need headphones for class each day in a labelled gallon sized baggie. Headphones will be used in Technology and in our classroom.

Students will use CLEVER or GOOGLE to log into all platforms.

All log ins will be provided.

The district will be using Go Guardian to monitor student technology use.

Email You can expect an email from me from time to time . This email will share the most important information to know about what has been taking place in the class and/or what is coming up.

Reading and Writing - Amplify

  • A structured systematic approach to teaching phonemic awareness and phonics.
  • Each unit will utilize a Shared Read of complex grade level text to teach vocabulary and build background knowledge.
  • Accountable Independent Reading Time will focus on student interest and appropriate book choice rather than a focus on independent reading levels.
  • Performance Task will assess the application of learned knowledge and skills.

Grading and Assessments

Standards Based report card

  • Instead of a letter grade students will receive a number grade (1 through 4). A marking of 4 indicates consistent mastery of standard.
  • Based on teacher observation and student assessments.

DIBELS Assessment:

  • A series of short test (both oral and written) that assess literacy skills such as phonemic awareness, accuracy, and fluency.
  • We start this assessment in October. More info to come!

New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA)

What does problem-based instruction look like?

  • The students spend a majority of their time solving carefully created and sequenced problems.
  • The teacher monitors discussions and pushes student thinking by asking questions and orchestrating discussions to move the learning forward.
  • Students frequently discuss math with each other, listen to others ideas, justify their thinking and critique the reasoning of others.

  • Cool Down - This is a brief independent activity to let the teacher know where the students are in their learning.
