What’s it used for?

When we want to describe the function or purpose of an object (what it does), we can use this structure:

A toaster is used for making toast.

Microwaves are used for heating food.

The important things to remember about this structure are:

1. If we are describing one object (singular), we use is. If we are describing more than one object (plural), we use are.
2. We have to use the -ing form of the verb, such as washing, cooking and watching.

What’s it made of?

When we want to describe the materials used to make an object, we can use this structure:

A t-shirt is made of cotton.

Boots are made of leather.

Again, we must remember to use is or are depending on the number of things we are describing.
