Young people are dying too

Cody Lyster expected to fully recover when he developed coronavirus symptoms in March.

But within a week, he was hospitalized and placed on a ventilator. Cody, 21, became the youngest person in Colorado to die of the coronavirus, according to NBC News as of April 19.

“Cody was young and he was healthy. He had no underlying medical issues and he played baseball,” his mother, Lea Ann, said. “He was athletic and active.”

Takeaways

Our research shows:

  • That this is not just a problem for the older population
  • Young people are a huge part of the problem and therefore the solution
  • There remains a lot of work to be done to combat misinformation
  • There is a huge opportunity to create a population that is better prepared to respond collectively in the event of a public health situation

What we learned

  • When we work together, we can make a difference, no matter how small
  • We have more influence than we think over local, national, and even global events
  • When we don’t educate ourselves and exercise our voice, misinformation prevails

12 of 14

Our Hope for the future.

  • We hope that COVID-19 cases in our city start trending downwards
  • We hope that economically disadvantaged groups stop being the most adversely affected groups by things like COVID-19
  • We hope that all communities in our city will stay vigilant and work together to combat this pandemic
  • We hope that the vaccine will be safe and distributed equitably

We Will Do our Part

Starting by reminding everyone watching this presentation to wear your mask, maintain social distance guidelines, wash your hands often, and stay vigilant.

And continuing by collaborating with other youth and organizations like St. Sabina, DFSS, and the city of Chicago, to make a positive difference in our communities and our city.
