The special education/additional supports that my child receives (such as speech/language therapy, reading support, occupational therapy, etc) are scheduled so that my child does not miss important academic time in the general education classroom to the maximum extent possible.

Common Parent Concerns (based on survey questions):

  • Identifying appropriate services
  • SEL services
  • Identifying need for evaluation
  • Communication to Parents
  • Bullying
  • Inclusion

Comments:

  • “We had to fight for services at Finn that were recommended by doctor and therapists, like 1:1 for eloping”
  • “SEL needs to be revamped and given our current school climate there needs to be SEL at every school. SEL needs to be headed by therapeutic models not ABA.”
  • “We have found the schools' services to generally be strong once you are in them, but getting identified for and then gaining access to appropriate services has been a constant and frustrating battle.”
  • “The process is not transparent at all, and the teacher felt unable to express their concerns with us - until we initiated the conversation.”
  • “Since entering CAP it is has been difficult to get a good understanding of how services are being delivered.”

Common Parent Concerns (unprompted feedback):

  • Staffing
  • IEP/504 Compliance
  • School Transition
  • Speech Services
  • Access to after school programs
  • Post High School Preparation

Comments:

  • “Concerned about ensuring that staffing is adequate to meet everyone's needs.”
  • “Zero implementation of appropriate 504 accommodations. A teacher who disregarded extended time and handed out zeros.”
  • “His disabilities are unique so each time he switches schools there is a significant learning curve for the team.”
  • “Concerned with whether she is getting effective reading and speech education.”
  • “Being OOD my child does not have a lot of opportunities to engage with peers in the NSBoro schools. His school has different hours and is 45 minutes away so he misses after-school opportunities in the district”
  • “I am concerned that my child is prepared for what comes after graduation especially if not going to college”
