OBJECTIVES

At the end of the Lesson the student must be able to:

1. understand Preventive Maintenance,

2. ​create Maintenance Schedules,

3. assess common computer system issues and recommend appropriate preventive measures to resolve them; and

4. apply Contingency Measures.

Preventive Maintenance on Computer Systems

As an Information Technology (IT) personnel, it is one of the most fundamental standards to conduct a preventive maintenance on systems and networks to ensure that the functionalities of the systems and network devices are in good running condition 24/7. Having these preventive measures eliminate further occurrence of troubles especially on systems and networks. Thus, these will also improve performance and increase the life span of the computer system and network for both hardware and software.

Common system maintenance tools for protection and optimization

Disk Defragmenter

• Fragmentation makes your hard disk do extra work that can slow down your computer. Removable storage devices such as USB flash drives can also become fragmented. Disk Defragmenter in Windows rearranges fragmented data so your disks and drives can work more efficiently. Disk Defragmenter runs on a schedule, but you can also analyse and defragment your disks and drives manually.

Disk Clean-up

• Disk Clean-up is a computer maintenance utility included in Microsoft Windows designed to free up disk space on a computer's hard drive. The utility first searches and analyses the hard drive for files that are no longer of any use, and then removes the unnecessary files.

Common system maintenance tools for protection and optimization

Windows Update

• Microsoft Windows Update is a Microsoft service for the Windows 9x and Windows NT families of operating system, which automates downloading and installing Microsoft Windows software updates over the Internet. It helps to optimize your system by updating the drivers and system patches.

Windows firewall/antivirus update

• Windows Firewall, is a firewall component of Microsoft Windows. It was first included in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Prior to the release of Windows XP Service Pack 2 in 2004, it was known as Internet Connection Firewall which helps prevent intrusion of viruses and spams. Some may be provided by external or third-party applications in the form of antivirus such as (Norton, Avast, Eset, Kaspersky and etc.).

• Your friend asked you a favor to help him with his laptop. He noticed that the system in working slow and several notifications have popped up on his screen. He elaborated some of the irregularities as follows:

1. Some keys are hard to press.

2. Keeps on displaying notifications (Set up windows update; windows defender needs to scan your computer; antivirus is out of date).

3. Cannot save files, memory is full.

• What could be the preventive measures he missed with the irregularities mentioned above? What will you suggest so that these problems will be resolved?
