Usability Test Plan

Introduction

Usability Test

Stakeholders: CareerFoundry

Last updated: April, 2021

Background

The discovery phase for my healthcare app began in January 2021 with competitive research and user interviews. We discovered that people need an easier way to engage with preventative health measures because studies show this leads to better healthcare outcomes. The resulting prototype is an initial hypothesis on how I hope to address the problem. Now, we would like to test the most important features and functionality designed for people to find personalized and general healthcare recommendations. Users can also search clinics and connect with healthcare providers.

Goal

The goal of this study is to evaluate the learnability of the healthcare application as it relates to understanding, functionality, and value.

Usability Test Plan

Test Objectives

  • Determine how well participants understand the purpose of the platform
  • Observe how participants navigate through the prototype
  • Understand participants’ perspectives on usability and utility

Methodology

All tests were conducted using Zoom, as moderated remote sessions. Each test began with a brief introduction about the project and explanation about my primary objectives for the study. I jotted down notes about their thoughts, behaviors, and attitudes as they went through each task. The study concluded with a debrief and Q&A.

Participants and Schedule

A total of 6 participants took part in the usability test. The participants were contacted through my personal network. The tests took place December 8th - 13th.

Usability Test Report

Issue 1: Onboarding Process

Severity: High

Suggested Change: Shift around order of operation for onboarding process and make a few additions

Evidence: Most of the participants felt the onboarding was smooth yet slightly incomplete. The order of the wireframes felt a little confusing to some, the prototype didn’t include consent forms, and the intake forms were incomplete.

Issue 2: Location of personal recommendations

Severity: Medium

Suggested Change: Move personal recommendations list to the home screen and remove from the “Search” umbrella.

Evidence: Most participants hesitated with how to begin task 1 or find their personalized healthcare recommendations. One participant felt going to “Search” was not intuitive. This point of friction can be eliminated by moving it to the “Home” page.

Issue 3: What exactly is meant by healthcare recommendations

Severity: Medium

Suggested Change: Revise descriptions for 2 of 3 tutorial wireframes about the main features/ the purpose of the app.

Evidence: 5 of 6 participants were unclear what was meant by healthcare recommendations & guidelines. While all appreciate the concept of the app, the descriptions for the tutorial need to be revised to be more clear.

Issue 4: Additional filter options

Severity: Medium

Suggested Change: Add option to filter through providers and clinics by distance and in network & out of network.

Evidence: Health insurance is complex. Identifying which providers are in-network would support people in search for the right provider. This was a common topic brought up by the participants. Including a filter option would ease concerns for users.

Issue 5: 2-step Verification

Severity: Low

Suggested Change: Add a wireframe to include some form of 2-step verification, specific when logging in to a user’s account.

Evidence: A few participants appreciate the added layer of security to their data and experience. It’s a simple, yet important added feature that should be included in the next prototype during the onboarding process.
