Tips for having difficult conversations

  • Validate your child’s feelings.
    • “I can tell you are disappointed about that” or “Oh that does sound exciting!”
  • Help your child to find respectful language to share their excitement and disappointments with peers that accounts for peers’ feelings.
    • “I’m so excited Friend A and I are both going to School A. Let’s make a plan for how we can write letters to each other to stay in touch, Friend B.
  • If your child is excited for next year, encourage them to consider how peers might feel and how they may support peers through this time.
    • “How do you think your classmates feel who are going to a school where they don’t know anyone? How can you help them to feel just as excited about next year as you are?”
  • If your child is disappointed or worried for next year, help to identify things that may help them to feel more comfortable.
    • “What do you think would help you feel less worried for next year?
    • “I hear that you are worried about not knowing anyone. Let’s reach out to your new school and see if there will be opportunities to meet some of your new classmates before school starts.”
