More on Private/Alternative Loans
The elmselect.com tool displays a neutral list of private lenders that Moravian University students have borrowed from.
Moravian University does not prefer, recommend, promote, endorse or suggest any of these lenders.
Fees: Look for potential fees like origination fees, late fees, and prepayment penalties.
Customer Service: Look for lenders with responsive and helpful customer service teams.
Interest Rates: Compare both fixed and variable interest rates, as well as the Annual Percentage Rate (APR) to understand the true cost of borrowing.
Repayment Terms: Evaluate the length of the repayment period and whether they offer options like interest-only or deferred payments while you're in school.
Borrower Protections: Check for options like forbearance or deferment in case you encounter financial difficulties.
Cosigner Release: If you need a cosigner, inquire about cosigner release options that would allow your cosigner to be released from their obligation after certain conditions are met.
Additional Benefits: Consider any extra perks offered, such as discounts for autopayments, loyalty rewards, or career assistance programs.
** Remember to double your fall bill to borrow for the full year**
Calculate Your Parent PLUS Loan Amount Example:
Step 1: Determine Fall Bill, $11,000 (EXAMPLE!!!)
Step 2: Decide if You Want to Borrow Extra: You can choose to borrow a little more to help with books, supplies, travel, or other expenses. Let’s say you want an extra $500 for books.
Fall total to borrow: $11,000 + $500 = $11,500
Step 3: Multiply by 2 for the Full Academic Year
Full year loan: $11,500 × 2 = $23,000
Step 4: Account for Loan Fees
The Parent PLUS Loan has a loan origination fee (currently about 4.228%). Use our Origination Fee Calculator
Loan amount you want to receive (net): $23,000
It will show you the gross loan amount (including fees) needed to cover this.
In this example, you’d need to borrow about $24,013 to receive $23,000 after fees.
Calculate Your Alternative Loan Amount Example:
Step 1: Determine Fall Bill
Step 2: Decide if You Want to Borrow Extra: You can choose to borrow a little more to help with books, supplies, travel, or other expenses. Let’s say you want an extra $500 for books.
Fall total to borrow: $11,000 + $500 = $11,500
Step 3: Multiply by 2 for the Full Academic Year
Full year loan: $11,500 × 2 = $23,000
