Organizing vs Mobilizing

  • Organizing is how you BUILD A COMMUNITY; Mobilizing is how you ENGAGE A COMMUNITY.
  • To organize is to BUILD POWER to create long term change; To mobilize is to SPEND POWER in order to achieve a goal.
  • Mobilizing is an aspect of Organizing which includes the following:

Your goal needs to be specific otherwise you won’t be able to focus your efforts.

Always start with asking yourself the 5 Ws when assessing your goal:

  • Who is involved?
  • What do I want to accomplish?
  • Where is it located?
  • Why is this goal important?
  • Which resources or limits are involved?

Measurable

Measuring your progress is important to track where you are in achieving your goal and it also helps you and your team stay motivated!

Ask yourself: How will I know when I have accomplished my goal?

  • How many volunteers do you want to recruit?
  • How long should it take you?
  • How many candidates do you want to help elect?
  • How many chapters do you want to establish?
  • How many phonebanks do you want to host?
  • How many doors do you want to knock?

Achievable

Goals must be both realistic and attainable! The goal should definitely test your abilities but should not be outside the reach of your organization or groups abilities & resources.

Ask yourself: How realistic is the goal, based on other constraints, such as financial factors?

It is very important that your goal matters to you, but also important that it also aligns with other relevant goals within your organization, group or community.

SHARING YOUR PERSONAL STORY - PUBLIC NARRATIVE

  • Stories are how we learn to make choices.
  • Stories are how we learn to access the moral and emotional resources we need to face the uncertain, the unknown, and the unexpected mindfully.
  • Because stories speak the language of emotion, the language of the heart, they teach us not only how we “ought to” act, but can inspire us with the “courage to” act.
  • Because the sources of emotion on which they draw are in our values, our stories can help us translate our values into action.

Challenge: Why did you feel it was a challenge? What was so challenging about it? Why was it your challenge?

Choice: Why did you make the choice you did? Where did you get the courage – or not? Where did you get the hope – or not? How did it feel?

Outcome: How did the outcome feel? Why did it feel that way? What did it teach you? What do you want to teach us? How do you want us to feel?
