Vision Statement for our Innovations Project

Public health nurses are among the strategic public health professionals in all the Massachusetts cities and towns and responsible for providing at a minimum the public health services defined by this innovations project and adopted by the state of MA.

Municipal Public Health Nurses are responsible for the development and implementation of local public health programs in compliance with federal state and local laws and regulations.

Action Steps Underway

  • 5 MAPHN Members received 64 hours of Leadership Training Fall/Winter 2022

  • Shared and enrolled MAPHN Members and other key stakeholders in our Vision Statement

  • Met monthly to create and execute a strategic plan to execute our vision of success
  • Identified primary barriers and costs

  • Established MAPHN volunteer subcommittees to research best practices in other states on

Standards of practice for public health services and cost savings

  • Generated a lists of legislators with contact information throughout the Commonwealth.

  • Planed the training for a 1-day training retreat to teach meeting skills, and prepare MAPHN

members to meet with town managers and leaders as well as legislators

  • MAPHN Leadership Matters Team Members received 9 coaching sessions from the Public

Sector Consortium to complete our Vision Deployment Matrix. This is on going.

Action Steps Underway

  • Public Health Program Cost Savings Research Committee met on July 12, 2023 to research and identify existing cost savings associated with public health nursing/foundational public health services.

    • Finalized the reports on cost savings and standards to be used by MAPHN representatives in meetings with stakeholders in the coming months.

    • 5 MAPHN Members participated and provided data for a brief report. We would like to thank MAPHN Members for their time, research and written contributions!

    • Developed Minimum Standards for Public Health Nurses delivering Foundational Public Health Services

Action Steps Underway

  • Minimum Standards of Public Health Nursing Sub Committee met on September 20, 2023, to provide any edits/upgrades to the municipal public health nurse workforce standards developed by the Massachusetts Association of Public Health Nurses (MAPHN) Leadership Matters Team Members.

    • 4 MAPHN Members were in attendance including (4) MAPHN Leadership Matters Team.

    • The edits to the document reflect input from our meeting on 9/20/2023, additional conversations with a subcommittee member, written feedback from an MAPHN member not in attendance as well as review from the MAPHN Leadership Matter Team.

    • Minimum Standards of Public Health Nursing was voted and approved at the MAPHN Board of Directors Meeting December 9, 2023.

    • We would like to thank all MAPHN members for their time and feedback!!
