What is a Multimedia Text Set (MMTS)?

(also referred to as a HyperDoc)

A Multimedia Text Set is a collection of “texts” surrounding a common topic, theme, or concept that includes resources from a wide variety of media sources.

Why is this a “thing”?

• Opportunities for collaborative learning
• Self-paced learning
• Easily differentiated or tweaked for alternative pathways
• Graphic organizers to organize information and student work (think AVID)
• Links to additional resources and learning activities to enrich learning
• Critical thinking engaged using higher level questioning techniques
• Integrates technology with multimedia sources
• Asks students to analyze and synthesize information to form a new and deeper meaning
• AND IT CAN BE FUN AND ENGAGING!

Cluster Three: Integration of Knowledge & Ideas

Students integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media formats. They evaluate arguments for claims, validity, relevance, and sufficient evidence. They analyze treatment of similar themes or topics.

How do I get started?

Creative Pathway

• Choose a topic, theme, or concept from your curriculum.
• Decide what you want the students to achieve from the MMTS or HyperDoc (backward-design planning).
• Develop learning objectives/targets.
• Gather multimedia texts, resources, etc.
• Choose a delivery method: Docs, Slides, Forms, or Sheets (your preference and students’ needs).
• Start designing! Keep in mind you want it to be:
• Visually engaging
• Interactive
• Deliver the MMTS or HyperDoc to your students, monitor their learning, and then collect their work product for grading.
