Advance Organizer.

Respond to the following question.

Think about a textbook you had in high school or college that you found difficult to understand. What was it they you found difficult about the book? What reading strategies helped you better understand the text? Did you try any strategies that weren’t particularly helpful in developing your understanding of the text?

Choose a story from Fun Brain (it can be the same as you chose for the previous slide) and identify the key story grammars and construct a story map similar to the one shown in Figure 7.4 (p. 297.) You can use a Google Jamboard, Google document, or other online resource to create the story map. You can insert it here or add a link.

Translanguaging: Translanguaging is the practice of using multiple languages to communicate and learn. It involves drawing on a speaker's full linguistic repertoire, without regard to the boundaries of named languages.

  1. Watch ‘Translanguaging Is What Bilinguals and Multilinguals Do’: A Primer for Teachers
  2. Read REL_PA_Translanguaging_to_Support_Students.pdf

Translanguaging Reading Comprehension Application:

One of your students, Maria, is struggling to understand a complex concept in a science textbook. Maria is fluent in both English and Spanish, but she seems to be having difficulty connecting the new information to her prior knowledge.

Technology and Reading Intervention

13 of 24

In special education, we use three types of technology:

  1. Educational Technology
  2. Assistive Technology
  3. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

It is important that you understand the difference between the three. You will need to use these with your students as a best practice, you will need to discuss these during IEP meetings and include them in IEPs, and they will be on the CalTPA assessment.

Educational Technology

Assistive Technology

Augmentative and Alternative Communication

Using professional resources online (google to find appropriate resources), what is your understanding of what each of the areas of technology are in special education?

15 of 24

How would the three areas of technology assist your student during their reading intervention? Be sure to address all three areas and provide examples of what you would use during your intervention sessions.

16 of 24

Sort the technology below into the correct area. If you aren’t sure what they are, google them before sorting. (*Two images fit in more than one category, so you can copy and paste.) You can enlarge the image if you need a closer look too.

Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology

  1. Read California Dyslexia Guidelines,

Chapter 12: Assistive Technology

  1. Download the ISET/CAST AT Wheel for online resources and ideas for AT. These will assist you in thinking about AT that may work for your intervention student for your poster. (I recommend you consider buying a complete wheel for lots of AT ideas for future use. It can be purchased here.

19 of 24

We should always consider AT that could be used with our students. Low and high tech options should be discussed at each IEP and tried with the student frequently. The SETT assessment (read the link) is a way to determine what AT a student may need. You will be completing a SETT assessment on your case study student and including your suggestions on your final poster.

IRIS Reading Instruction Modules

  1. Choose 1 of the following IRIS Modules based on your grade level(s) and/or content are of interest:

*Remember that while PALS was developed for typical students, it can be used at any grade level in special education

For Extensive Support Needs Candidates only:

How could you modify the concepts you learned in your selected IRIS module to work in your setting? Be creative, think about assistive technology, and possible communication needs of students. Most students in ESN settings only interact with adults, so how could what you learned be used to encourage facilitated peer interactions?
