Teachers with a preliminary credential have 5 years to “clear” their credential in order to renew it. The process to clear your credential is called “induction”.

Induction programs are:

  • 2 years for new teachers (with an early completion option for experienced teachers)
  • focused on individual mentoring and goal setting
  • based on the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTPs)
  • typically offered for free by most school districts

CSLA offers an induction program for multiple subject, single subject,

and education specialist credentials.

What credentials does the program include?

The induction program at Cal State LA includes candidates with single subject credentials in all content areas, multiple subject credentials, and education specialist credentials.

How long does it take to complete the program?

The program for candidates in their first year of teaching is 2 years (4 semesters). Candidates who can demonstrate 2 or more years of successful teaching experience qualify for the Early Completion Option (1 year program).

How much does the program cost?

If the candidate is exclusively pursuing a clear teaching credential, the program is 3 units per semester (which falls under the <6 units part-time category) at the credential program fee level. However, many candidates in the Cal State LA induction program are simultaneously pursuing their Master's degree. Those fees are based on the number of units taken at the Master's degree fee level. For specific tuition/fee information, go to the Cal State LA Finance Service Centers Student Fees Page and click on the semester and year you plan to enroll. Financial Aid is available - please see the Cal State LA Financial Aid Page.
