  • AI did NOT write that song (but it can compose parody songs)

How to use it/What is it?

  • We’ll look at 3 of the many chat programs out there

  • They all use some form of Machine Learning-Using statistical models to find patterns (in existing LARGE data sets provided to them) and make predictions (to provide responses to the prompts given to them).

  • They have some limits on how many responses they will give
  • Each time you prompt (ask for something), you may get different responses.

    • What you want
    • Why you want it
    • How you want it (in table, in bullet list, in paragraph, …)
  • You will have to tell it those things if you want it to use that in some way in forming its response
  • Can try to tell it all at once or tell it in a conversation (prompt chain)

Customize ChatGPT

  • ChatGPT allows you to give some information about yourself that it stores long-term
  • Thus you don’t have to repeat it in every chat
  • In other programs, you will need to repeat useful information at the start of each chat if that information would be helpful in generating the response.

  • I am a technical trainer at an insurtech company. I taught math at the University level for 32 1/2 years and I am returning to adjunct one class in Fall 2024 semester.

  • The class I am teaching is called Math Technologies. We will be looking at how interactive technologies like a graphing calculator, GeoGebra, and Desmos can help in understanding and reviewing concepts from Calculus and High School Geometry. I want to create lab activities to help students discover ideas using the interactive technology rather than simply delivering facts.

What is prompt engineering�or prompt design?

  • Think of GenAI as a student teacher (or intern)
  • They’ve been trained on theory of education
  • But, they need specifics as to what you expect them to do with that theory
  • Such as-what grade level, what topic, what type of activities, what classroom management challenges they might experience
  • It remembers within the context of each conversation, but each new conversation is back to original blank slate
  • Or think of it as a student, who isn’t understanding the assignment yet

  • I am teaching an algebra class to high school freshman. To show how solving the quadratic equation can be useful to students, I want to demonstrate using a play. Write a short script, with scene information, with at least two characters talking about how useful the quadratic equation can be.

  • As a kindergarten teacher in Illinois teaching students about Counting. Prepare some assessment questions using names (which will be replaced by actual student names from the class). Give multiple choice, matching, and sorting questions. Provide the answer and feedback for each question.
  • This type of prompt has worked much better for me when I have given it specific information (slide bullet points)
  • https://www.isbe.net/Documents/math-standards.pdf are the standards in IL. Can we tell if the chat program was aware of these standards?

How I have used it

  • I am teaching a Math Technologies class
  • With careful prompting, getting ChatGPT to write the labs for me
  • Build out a lab activity for graphing mathematical function using the following three graphing utilities: TI-83 graphing calculator, Desmos, GeoGebra. Include specific steps to do in each and include 10 questions that students will respond to based on their explorations. Some of those questions could involve submitting screenshot of their completed work in these programs.”

Training Feud

  • “You will facilitate a version of Family Feud for training scenarios. The user will provide a topic, and your goal is to generate a question related to that topic which could have multiple responses. You will then determine the top 4 to 8 responses for that question. Ensure responses are relevant and suitable for a training environment. Initially accept an answer. If it is the top answer, that team has the option to play or pass. If it is not the top answer, the second team has the opportunity to guess a higher-ranking answer. If they do, they get the opportunity to play or pass. Keep track of wrong responses and allow the other team to answer once three wrong responses have been given by the first team. Answers should only be given after a team guesses them correctly. Maintain a friendly and engaging tone, making the experience enjoyable and educational. Use a sarcastic tone throughout the game. Be ready to explain the reasoning behind each response if asked, and offer variations or additional questions if needed. Tell how many answers are on the board and end the game once all correct answers have been given. For each correct answer give 100 divided by number of options points. Truncate if that score is not an integer. If the other teams steals, they get all the points earned that round.”

  • From material teachers give-could be uploaded and similar question asked with request to base it off the material provided.

  • Here we’ll use my prior responses (that I know have problems).
