A wellness policy helps create a healthy school environment.

Our wellness policy talks about:

  • Nutrition education
  • Physical activity

Foods Sold to Students�

  • Our wellness policy supports healthy school breakfasts and lunches.
  • All other food and beverages sold in school during the school day must follow the Smart Snacks standards.

Keeping Fundraisers Healthy

At our school, we try to make our fundraising efforts healthy and fun, such as:

  • Walk-a-thons or fun runs
  • Jump-rope-a-thon, dance-off, or dance party
  • Selling fruits and vegetables
  • Sports tournaments (kickball, volleyball)
  • Selling items (wrapping paper, magazines)
  • Silent Auction for experiences: principal for the day, pie in the face, etc.

Understanding Food and �Beverage Marketing

  • We want images and messages in our school to support healthy choices.
  • Look around your classrooms to see if you have any food or beverage marketing.

Food and Beverages Provided �(Not Sold) to Students�

  • Classroom snacks and celebrations. Snacks that are encouraged include fruits, vegetables, granola bars, graham crackers, animal crackers, popcorn, pudding, or yogurt cups, etc. Snacks or party treats must be prepackaged or commercially prepared.

CCSD Wellness Policy - Regulation

Our Wellness Policy Regulation describes 3 district specific goals to ensure we implement the Wellness Policy.

Goal 1 - Nutrition Education and Promotion: Schools will provide nutrition education and engage in nutrition promotion that helps students develop lifelong healthy eating behaviors.

  • The goal(s) for addressing nutrition education and nutrition promotion include the following:
  • Offer nutrition education at each grade level as part of a sequential, comprehensive, standards-based program designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote and protect their health
  • Include enjoyable, developmentally appropriate, culturally relevant participatory activities, such as contests, promotions, taste testing and school gardens
  • Promote fruits, vegetables, whole-grain products, low-fat and fat-free dairy products, healthy food preparation methods, and health-enhancing nutrition practices
  • Emphasize caloric balance between food intake and physical activity
  • Provide information about the Healthy Kids Act and nutrition standards in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs on the district nutritional services wellness page
  • Demonstrate a commitment to discourage the use of food as a reward

CCSD Wellness Policy - Regulation

Goal 2 - Physical Activity: Schools will provide students with age and grade appropriate opportunities to engage in physical activity that meet the Iowa Healthy Kids Act. The goal(s) for addressing physical activity include the following:

  • Develop a comprehensive, school-based physical activity program that includes the following components:
    • Physical education
    • Recess
    • Classroom based physical activity
  • Provide knowledge and self-management skills needed to maintain a physically active lifestyle and to reduce time spent on sedentary activities
  • Engage students in moderate to vigorous activity during at least 50 percent of physical education class time
  • Afford elementary students with recess according to the following:
    • At least 20 minutes a day
    • Outdoors as weather and time permits
  • Ensure physical activity is not used for or withheld as a punishment
  • Encourage teachers to incorporate physical activity within and between lessons or classes as appropriate

  • We want kids to have the opportunity to be physically active at school.

    • engage students in moderate to vigorous activity during at least 50% of the PE class time

Goal 3 - Other School Based Activities that Promote Wellness: As appropriate, schools will support students, staff, and parents’ efforts to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The goal(s) for addressing other school-based activities that promote student wellness include the following:

  • Provide parents / legal guardians a list of foods and beverages that meet nutrition standards for classroom snack and celebrations
  • Develop a plan to promote staff health and wellness
  • Share information about the nutritional content of meals with parents / legal guardians and students
  • Permit students to bring and carry water bottles filled with water throughout the day
  • Encourage fundraising efforts held outside school hours to sell only non-food items, promote physical activity, or include foods and beverages that meet or exceed the Smart Snacks nutrition standards.
