SWOT Analysis Exercise

  • Recall that SWOT analysis is meant to be used as an input to strategic planning.
    • Strengths are generally internal to our organization and help us in achieving our goals and manage threats. Strengths can be anything from our patent portfolio to distribution network to skills of our technical team, or perhaps a very strong brand..
    • Weaknesses are also internal and present obstacles or outright blockers to our goals/objectives. These could include anything from lack of funding to poor training, perhaps a challenging location making quality employee recruitment challenging.
    • Opportunities are generally external and provide chances for us to excel in the marketplace. If, for example, we have a technical product for which the marketplace wasn’t ready, we may have an opportunity with increase adoption of technology and ubiquitous broadband. Perhaps an economic slowdown makes our less expensive offering more attractive.
    • Threats are also generally external. Examples include new, costly compliance with regulations. Perhaps a shortage of talented technical skills in the employee marketplace, and similar.
