  • Shortage of available blood sometimes occur due to decrease in donors or an increase in deferrals.
  • Such shortages may also happen during crisis, like the Pandemic COVID-19.
  • Therefore, its vital to have adequate recruiting procedures for donors.

    • expected attendance of more than 50 donors at each drives
    • blood drives organized every 2 months
  • blood drives in localities outside of the city as GPs practising in rural and semi-rural areas would have more developed roles as family doctors
  • GPs practising within the areas of the selected blood drives were invited ti participate in the study

  • PROMOTION OF BLOOD DONATION BY PARTICIPATING GPs
    • posters advertising the blood drives were displayed in the waitting room of participating GPs sugeries.
    • 2 different posters were given
      • a A3 format and aimed to promote blood donation among community residents
      • a A4 format that shows date, time and location of the next blood drive

DISCUSSION

  • Donors showed a positive appraisal of posters - 68% said that the posters would encourage them to donate.

  • Altruism = main motivator to donate (74.8%)

  • Posters and pamphlets were declared to be the leading source of awareness about blood donations

  • Our result support the idea that message delivered in waiting room can enhance awareness or knowledge without systematically modified behavior.

  • Verbal encouragement or digital reminders by text message or social network should have a positive impact when the target population is well defined

  • 52.5% donors reported that they had seen the posters promoting blood donation in their GPs waiting room.

  • The manner of receiving and managing patient attending GPs and especially with how to deal in waiting rooms has been profoundly affected by Pandemic COVID-19.

CONCLUSION

  • Posters in the waiting room advertising upcoming blood drive do not appear a major effect of participation in blood drives.
  • These posters could help to provide practical information to potential blood donors and likely reinforce the health behavior already display by each individual.
