Proposed Changes to Standard 2 (Cultures, Linguistics, Literatures, and Concepts from Other Disciplines)

    • understand and use of the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements for Intercultural Communication and the Reflection Tool for Learners
  • Add “Intercultural Communication” to the title.

Proposed Changes to Standard 3

(SLA and Knowledge of Students and Their Needs)

The verbiage for the Standard 3a and 3b largely remainsthe same, with suggested descriptors that reflect the ACTFL priorities for equity, diversity, and inclusion.

  • There are many updates in 3a and 3b that incorporate concepts of the communicative classroom, world languages, and social interactions that promote authentic exchange of knowledge and information to support learning.
  • In 3b, the notion of the inclusive classroom, a place for all learners is articulated, as well as updated language involving learning differences.
  • Also, in 3b, teacher knowledge regarding heritage language learners and their assets and learner needs are also more specifically addressed.

Proposed Changes to Standard 4

(Standards Integration)

Add:

4a) Use the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements (2017) and state standards as the basis for instructional planning and use principles of backward design.

4b) Integrate the Benchmarks and Indicators of the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements (2017) and their state standards in their classroom practice.

4c) Remove 4c. It’s no longer necessary due to the updated suggestions for 4b.

  • The section about technology will be reworded to include information about knowledge of virtual language learning.

Proposed Changes to Standard 5

(Assessment of Languages and Cultures)

Add more on candidate knowledge of types of summative and formative assessments:

Candidates have knowledge of...

  • IPAs
  • AAPPL, STAMP, and other computer-based performance assessments
  • Inclusive assessments

Proposed Changes to Standard 6 (Professionalism)

  • 6a revisions:
    • The need for professional learning will unpacked.
    • Additional information about re-evaluating one’s perspectives and the influence of culture, as well as culturally responsive teaching practices was added.
  • 6b revisions:
    • The importance of cultural competence for teachers is highlighted in these revisions and the standard now showcases the role of teachers and their families and communities.
    • The role of the community in advocating for language study was added.
    • The definition of advocacy was expanded to include an examination of the teacher shortage and steps that could address that shortage, as well as content in the language classroom to address privilege and to support marginalized communities.
  • 6c revisions:
    • Information about the ACTFL statement on diversity and inclusion was added, as well as the role of culturally responsive teaching practices in the world language classroom.
