Introduction to VILS

Verizon Innovative Learning Schools (VILS) provides every 5th-8th grader at Crescent City Schools a Chromebook!

The Chromebooks fold into tablets, have touchscreens, a stylus, and they all get a carrying case. These Chromebooks also have built-in LTE data to support learning at home.

VILS provides us with PD, observations and feedback, access to new and exciting programs like the new Immersive Media Lab and other STEM opportunities…

and a tech integration coach:

Erin Theriot!

What we do as a VILS school…

We agree to be intentional about integrating technology into our teaching practice.

We participate in training from VILS and complete all surveys they send our way.

We meet with our VILS coach to plan techy things in class, and participate in observations a few times a year.

I maintain a digital portfolio of the work we do as a school. That’s in the form of video, photos, and snapshots of your tech-based lessons.

I will always keep you informed of what is expected of us in this program, so don’t stress.

What does Ms. Theriot do?

Anybody in the building can come to me for all things related to educational technology!

An important distinction:

Chase Dugan is your guy for tech support.

Erin Theriot is your gal for tech integration in your classroom.

If something is broken, call Chase.

If you need to use tech to teach a lesson, call Erin.

What CAN your VILS Coach do for you?

GATHER RESOURCES

Hunt for those hard-to-find technology components and ideas. Tell me what the need is,

and I’ll find the answer!

CLASSROOM HELP

Serve as another pair of hands/eyes for a lesson to track student concerns, as a silent partner.

REFLECTION or

GOAL SETTING

Through conversation and observation, reflect on student learning in your classroom.

BRAINSTORMING or TROUBLESHOOTING SESSION

Bounce innovative ideas off one another over an informal session. I can also help when one of our tools isn’t working out the way you’d hoped, or you need help making something work for you.

Setting us up for success…

  1. Digital Citizenship Lessons all year
  2. In-Class Tech Stations and Signage
  3. Student Tech Handbooks

SECURLY should be used to monitor students’ independent work, especially assessments! A vigilant eye is important otherwise. Example: should I see more than one tab open when I scan the room?

COMMON LANGUAGE

Teachers will use the Traffic Lights to guide students to know what level of use Chromebooks are in. Use tech in your BMC and MVP directions always!

STUDENT EXAMPLES

Teachers will present examples of excellent student work using the Chromebook, especially when using new skills.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Teachers will require student re-do assignments in apps if they are not up to par with the rubric and grading standards provided.

REINFORCEMENT

Teachers will use SchoolRunner deposits to reinforce proper Chromebook use. Students will earn and redeem points earned in each of their classes.

ENGAGING WORK

Students should never have “free time” with devices without guidance on what they may do.

Teachers will provide predetermined, engaging, and educational tasks for students if they complete their work with time to spare.

Best Practices for Teaching with Tech

14 of 21

What does tech coaching look like?

WHO: All 5th - 8th grade teachers.

WHAT: Monthly observations & debriefs.

HOW: We will start the year off with an extra layer of support to help you start with tech in your classroom. We will help you integrate new curricula that have a tech element, and offer ways for you to learn new tools at a *personalized* pace. Later, we will use the Technology Integration Matrix, which allows us to see the intersection how teachers leveraging technology improves student learning outcomes.

WHEN:

  • Our first cycle will start when student device rollout happens in the coming weeks.
    • Look for:
      • Tech Station Setup, including posters.
      • Securly during assessments.
      • SR logs for tech-based items.
    • Listen for: MVP/BMC directions that include technology
      • We will focus on helping you with the muscle memory needed to successfully run your class with tech!
        • Examples: Narrate devices going into cases when you’re done using them for a while; narrate where screens should be. Narrate “we have [site] open and nothing else.”

TECH INTEGRATION DOESN’T MEAN WE USE A COMPUTER FOR EVERY LESSON OF EVERY DAY.

Tech Integration is not:

Substitution for paper.

Tech Integration is:

Transformative - beyond paper.

Not possible without tech.

The TIM is what we use for tech lesson observations. It shouldn’t make you nervous, but it’s a tool *you* should use when planning to use technology in your classroom. It is a great guide to ensuring we are do everything we can to transform learning!

PROBLEM

SOLUTION

The power goes out.

Student devices that are charged can still use data!

The internet goes down.

Student devices have data. You can usually use your phone’s mobile data for your computer. You also can have prepared other work that can be done at any time, including but not limited to independent reading, catch-up work, or a review.

There’s a fire drill.

Students can close lids, leave Chromebooks on their desks and evacuate as normal.

Planning for the Unexpected…
