Molecules in Solids, Liquids and Gases

Solids:

  • Atoms are closely spaced
  • Vibrate in position but do not change relative locations
  • May be formed from molecules
  • May be extended structures with repeating subunits (e.g., crystals, monomers/polymers).
  • Definite volume

Liquids:

  • Made of molecules that are moving about relative to each other.
  • Each molecule is constantly in contact with others
  • Molecules can “roll” over one another allowing them to pour
  • Molecules farther apart than solids, but closer together than liquids
  • Takes the shape of its container, but definite volume

Gases:

  • Made of molecules or inert atoms that are moving about relative to each other.
  • Molecules are widely spaced except when they happen to collide
  • Spread out to fill the shape of their container
  • Molecules move fast and are far apart
