Molecules in Solids, Liquids and Gases
Solids:
- Atoms are closely spaced
- Vibrate in position but do not change relative locations
- May be formed from molecules
- May be extended structures with repeating subunits (e.g., crystals, monomers/polymers).
- Definite volume
Liquids:
- Made of molecules that are moving about relative to each other.
- Each molecule is constantly in contact with others
- Molecules can “roll” over one another allowing them to pour
- Molecules farther apart than solids, but closer together than liquids
- Takes the shape of its container, but definite volume
Gases:
- Made of molecules or inert atoms that are moving about relative to each other.
- Molecules are widely spaced except when they happen to collide
- Spread out to fill the shape of their container
- Molecules move fast and are far apart
