Each student enters school healthy and learns about and practices a healthy lifestyle.

Some of the ways we support the health and well-being of our K/5 students include:

  • 30 minutes of daily Physical Education (PE) class
  • 30-45 minutes of daily recess
  • the utilization of 2 full time counselors
  • the implementation of Responsive Classroom practices, a social-emotional curriculum that consists of practical strategies for helping children build and utilize academic and social-emotional competencies.

Each student learns in an environment that is physically and emotionally safe.

Some of the ways we support the physical and emotional safety of our students include:

  • the use of co-created behavioral expectations in classrooms and in shared spaces
  • the intentional use of time for relationship building in and beyond school walls (morning meetings, camps, multi-age opportunities, etc.)
  • the implementation of school-wide practices that support kindness, safety and responsibility

Each student is actively engaged in learning and is connected to the school and broader community.

Some of the ways we actively engage our students and provide them with opportunities to connect to the school and larger community include:

  • cooperative learning activities
  • opportunities for choice that reflect students’ interests, goals and learning styles
  • experiential learning to support and enhance the Common Core State Standards (research based, rigorous, aligned with college and career expectations, promote higher order thinking skills), and to make learning relevant (field trips, projects, service learning, etc.)
  • encouraging and practicing responsibility for our environment
  • gradually releasing responsibility to students so that they learn to monitor and direct their own progress

Each student has access to personalized learning and is supported by qualified, caring adults.

Some of the ways we support our students include:

  • providing adult-student relationships that encourage and support each child’s personal and academic growth
  • considering student performance and child development when making decisions about curriculum, instruction and other school-wide practices
  • the teaching and modeling of prosocial behavior
  • serving as advocates for our students’ needs
  • welcoming and including all families as partners in their child’s education and as integral members of our school community
  • providing access to school counselors and other structured academic, social and emotional support systems

Each student is challenged academically and prepared for success in college or further study and for employment and participation in a global environment.

Some of the ways we challenge our students include:

  • using qualitative and quantitative data to support academic and personal growth
  • providing opportunities to learn with and through technology (*2013-2014 student technology roll-out)
  • providing opportunities for students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving and reasoning skills
  • communicating high expectations
  • utilizing a variety of assessments to monitor and maximize student progress
