The Pekin Pals
Rescued and Searching for a Home
2 Females
1 Male
Located in West Sacramento, CA
We’ve been ADOPTED!
On July 9th, 2021 the three Pekin Pals were discovered abandoned beside a neighborhood pond. It was 109 degrees that day, and they couldn’t get down to the water because of the steep, rocky shore and the low pond level.
We brought containers of water and peas, and they immediately ran up to drink. They were loaded into the back of our car and brought to our property for baths and proper care. They were so dirty that the fresh pool turned almost black right away, and they had varying degrees of wet-feather from not having access to clean bathing water.
Despite their ordeal, they thoroughly enjoyed their first bath.
The water was clear before they got in.
The next day, the wet-feather was already looking better, and they had a good sunset preening session after another bath and time in the garden.
Day 1: Drying after bath
Day 2: Drying after bath
By day 5 they were settling in to their new routine, their feathers were looking much better, and we now could confirm that there were 2 females and 1 male.
Look at those shiny feathers!
Once they had settled in and we could handle them without stressing them too much, we started treating bumblefoot in the two females (the male’s feet were in much better shape), and we fitted them for protective shoes to aid in their recovery.
The three Pekin Pals are now looking for their new, forever home.
We are not sure of their age, though they seem young based on their behavior and recent molt, and the two females are not laying yet. The females are making great progress in their bumblefoot treatment. They all appear to be used to people and are becoming more confident and friendly every day.
They are a tightly bonded trio who has been through a lot and deserves a new lease on life.
