WordPress Origin Story

  • I share my origin story on my .org profile: https://profiles.wordpress.org/mariaojob/
  • At first, all I wanted to do was write! I am still a big fan of personal blogging btw!
  • My dream job was being an HR Chief who managed people in a big firm!

Then I discovered WordPress & the “Community….”

  • First in 2012, but I thought ooh this looks complicated, I just want to write…. Then again in 2015, my search for a community started in 2016, and this is when I found Make.WordPress.org
  • Thanks to Mor10 and his Introduction to WordPress videos, I got hooked!

Then I discovered WordPress & the “Community….” (Contd.)

  • Dormant, almost non-existent community in Nigeria
  • WordPress was Popular, but also yet unpopular because there was no active community!
  • The rest they say is “History”, well I hope not! Picture below is from the 1st meetup I hosted.

In conclusion…

  • This ideology above is what brought me to where I am today, it is what made me seek out the community, to learn though and I found myself learning and then giving back!
  • Being a part of the community opened my mind further on the “Power of Community”
  • Volunteering led me to being a freelancer
  • Then it led me to having a full time job in the ecosystem
  • And that got me thinking about building a business too, with the aim to make impact on my customers and employees

Why should you contribute to the future of WordPress?

This comes to mind for me;

‘A community where no one judges or looks down on you regardless of your ability, skill and where you come from, that is where you should be!’

Why contribute?

Put it this way;

  • Think of the people who will be impacted by you, socially, financially, educationally, etc

When I think of those people and how I have also been impacted, I am fulfilled!

  • If I have not convinced you enough on why you should contribute, read the stories on HeroPress; read one everyday either way! Thank you, Topher, and please donate to HeroPress too if you can: https://heropress.com/donate/
