College Application Process

  1. Fill out the application (Oct. is free application month for many MN schools)
    1. You can do this in Schoolinks, or through each college individually
      • College Applications in Schoolinks- Track applications and request important documents, like transcripts and recommendation letters, all in one place!
  2. Gather Supplemental Materials (recommendation letters, portfolio/resume)
  3. Request to send transcripts and ACT scores to interested colleges
    • Ask Miss Golish for a transcript, ACT scores need to be sent from the ACT site
      • Transcripts can be downloaded & sent through Schoolinks
    • List 4 colleges for free when you take the ACT, otherwise $18 for additional score report
  4. Visit Colleges
  5. Most college applications will be due in November and February

Reciprocity

Minnesota has agreements with neighboring states to provide lower tuition for Minnesota residents to attend public colleges and universities in those states.

Minnesota has reciprocity with Wisconsin, North Dakota, and South Dakota. It also has agreement with the Canadian province of Manitoba and limited agreement with Iowa Lakes Community College.

Scholarships/Awards

  • Check with the colleges/programs you are interested in for scholarships (ex. First Generation, First Year, etc.)
  • Check in with Miss Golish for scholarship info, local & national scholarships, and online scholarships
  • Most scholarships are due from February-April
  • Apply for as many scholarships as you can that you are eligible for. It may be a daunting task, but it is free money!

  • Take ASVAB Junior Year, Seniors can take as well
  • Get to know the different branches to find what’s right for you
  • Recruiter will come to the school to connect with you

Apprenticeships/Trades

Construct Tomorrow Website- This apprenticeships and trades site provides links to training centers of local trades partners, provides videos, and other info for students and parents.

Apprenticeships combine on-the-job paid training with related technical instruction. It is designed to produce workers who are competent in all aspects of an occupation, including knowledge, skill and proficiency on the job

A high school diploma or G.E.D. is required for applicants. Math, Science and Industrial Tech courses are especially helpful in being considered for an apprenticeship
