The Triangle: ISO, Shutter Speed & Aperture

ISO: What Is It?

4 of 8

  • ISO is like the dial on the radio
  • Higher ISO – imagine turning up the volume, you capture more sound but it turns up the static as well. That’s what we call noise
  • Lower ISO – Softvolume setting, images have less noise but are likely darker. Good for outdoors where there is no shortage of light.

Shutter Speed

6 of 8

  • Shutter Speed is the speed at which your camera blinks

  • Faster speed is like a quick blink, great for freezing a moving athlete or a hummingbird or if you’re shooting from a vehicle.

  • Slower speeds leaves the “eye” open longer, great for capturing more light and showing motion, like cars moving at night or flowing water

Aperture

8 of 8

  • Think of aperture as the pupil of the eye
  • Larger openings (Like f/1.4) allow more light in, but focus on a smaller area
  • Smaller openings (like f/22) let it less light, but focus on a wider scene
