Syllabus Statements & Accommodations

Include SARC Statement: Every syllabus should contain information about SARC services, so students know how to request accommodations.

ADA Compliance: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law. Compliance is a shared responsibility across campus.

Flexible Use: Students may begin using accommodations any time during the semester. Do not set a deadline in the syllabus.

Activation: Accommodations start once the professor receives the accommodation letter. They are not retroactive.

The Accommodation Process

The next step in the eligibility process is the creation of the Accommodation Letter - that happens at the SARC.

The Accommodation Letter:

  • Identifies the student.
  • Lists the date and current semester.
  • Details what accommodations are needed.
  • Invites you to call the SARC with concerns or questions about specific accommodations.

The Accommodation Letter

You are the content expert – and the courts grant you great deference. Therefore, if you feel an accommodation conflicts with an essential element of your course, please call the SARC and let us negotiate a solution that protects the student, you and the university.

Realize that students are often uncomfortable talking about their disabilities with you. Be respectful and keep the information shared confidential. Do not ask the student to disclose additional information about their disability.

If a student receives test accommodations, you should discuss how tests will be handled.

The student should schedule an appointment or see you during your office hours to discuss the accommodation letter.

Accommodations and Exams

We may ask you to provide accommodations on exams that could interfere with other responsibilities or that are not logistically possible for you.

If so, you have the option of allowing the student to take exams at the SARC. We will provide the accommodations for you in our proctoring lab – a space specifically designed for this purpose.

Accommodations and Exams

Information on Test Proctoring can be found at the Faculty Resources section of the SARC website: https://ww2.georgiasouthern.edu/students/sarc/resources/new-students/test-proctoring/

We will send you an Exam Proctoring Notice when we request a test for a student to take in SARC. This form will help you provide us with instructions concerning how your exam is to be given and how it should be returned to you. This information is vital in assisting us to supervise your exams properly.
