The Future of Central Park
New Master Plan approved in 2018
New Central Park Master Plan. The City Council approved a new Central Park Master Plan in 2018. It will be implemented in four phases over several years. The first phase includes the playground renovation (11) and Fallen Heroes Memorial (9). The later phases include relocation of the tennis courts (15), construction of a new plaza and community building (2, 7).
Playground renovation. A major renovation of the playground is coming soon. Major features include an Adventure Village that includes a zip line, boardwalk, as well as the usual swings, slides and climbing features. A separate Enchanted Forest section will have features for younger children.
Fallen Heroes Memorial. This memorial honors San Mateo resident military servicemembers and police and fire community members who died in the line of duty. It comprises five staggered red columns that, when viewed from the great lawn, form a poppy. College of San Mateo Architecture students contributed to the conceptual design.
