Step 1: Identify the setting: Identify the setting where the learner needs to demonstrate the targeted skills

Step 2: Conduct an ecological inventory: The teacher needs to go into the environment and observe a few times to identify the necessary social skills that are required to be successful in the given environment.

Step 3: Develop the script: Create the dialogue that will occur between the learner and the conversation partners during the role play.

Step 4: Create the simulation environment:

  1. role play in the same environment
  2. incorporate as much common stimuli from the targeted setting
  3. incorporate people who resemble the people in the targeted setting (i.e. similar age).

Step 5: Model the role play scenario: The teacher models the role play with someone else (i.e. strong peer, assistant teacher) while the targeted learner observes.

Step 6: Incorporate the learner:

  1. Student practices their part in the role play
  2. Use visual cues (written scripts)
  3. Fade out words from the script over time
