Awareness to Capacity
Crosswalk Note Catcher
At our next Math Leadership Session we will take a deep look at the NYS Math Standards Crosswalk Documents and start to plan curricular and instructional changes for the upcoming school years.
Next Generation Standards Unpacking Documents
By our next meeting NYSED will have released documents that will help teachers unpack the new standards.

Quick Images
We want to orient today’s discussion of the practice standards around two concrete take-aways:

Quick Images: What practices does this routine support?
Find a copy of the math practice standards.
Which practices does the Quick Images routine bring into focus?
22
kdavis@ocmboces.org
The 5x8 card
23
kdavis@ocmboces.org
Eggs and cups and the 5x8 card
Think back over both Quick Images routines (the eggs and the cups).
What Vital Student Actions would someone have been able to observe?
How do those relate to the practices we discussed before?
24
kdavis@ocmboces.org
Let’s try it!
As you watch, look for the vital student actions described on the 5x8 card.

25
kdavis@ocmboces.org
What did we see?
Discuss with your table mates: which vital student actions did you see or hear?
26
kdavis@ocmboces.org
Observing Instruction: Why?
What purposes do instructional leaders have for observing classroom instruction?
For which of these purposes might the 5x8 card be useful?
27
kdavis@ocmboces.org
Observation and feedback with the 5x8 card: How?
Remember:
Support - not evaluation
Vulnerability comes with partnership, not judgment
Teaching is complex, and meaningful improvement is gradual
28
kdavis@ocmboces.org
Rehearsals!
In pairs…
Rehearse a post-lesson discussion about student vital actions and the math practice standards with “Ms. Fox.”
Stay in the rehearsal until it’s over!
Give your partner feedback, then swap roles.
29
kdavis@ocmboces.org
What’s next for you?
Discuss in district groups: How can you use the math practice standards to frame discussions about instruction with your teachers?
How might the 5x8 card be useful to instructional leaders in your district?
