Utility Data Analysis
and Calculating Energy Use Intensity
Utility Data Analysis and Calculating Energy Use Intensity
In this learning module we will gather energy information for a building (residence) based on annual utility data.
Using the information from the data, we will calculate the Energy Use Intensity (EUI) for the residence using the standard industry metric
(kBtu/sf-year).
Use Excel as a tool to document your analysis and make an assessment on the energy efficiency of the residence based on a sample rating system.
Develop a professional document in Memo format to present your work.
Energy Units
Electricity kW (Demand) kilowatt (1,000 Watt)
kWh (Energy) kilowatt-hour (1,000 Watt-hr)
Natural Gas cf (cubic feet)
Therm
Btu = Energy needed to raise 1 lb of water by 1°F
1 kWh = 3412 Btu
1 Therm = 100,000 Btu
1 kBtu = 1,000 Btu
1 MMBtu = 1,000,000 Btu
Energy Utilization Index (EUI)
Sum of all fuels converted into a single unit kBtu
Divided by the conditioned floor area (sq. ft)
EUI = kBtu/sq.ft-year
Electricity
1 kWh = 3.412 kBtu
Multiply electric use in kWh by 3.412 to get electric use in kBtu
Natural Gas
1 Therm = 100 kBtu
Multiply gas use in Therms by 100 to get gas use in kBtu
The Assignment
Using an Excel and the utility bills for natural gas and electricity provided, record the values for natural gas and electricity for the residence.
Use the Excel template that is provided.
Set up your spreadsheet to convert natural gas and electricity to kBtu.
Determine the following:
Energy Use Intensity in kBtu/sf-year
Energy Cost/sf-year
Energy Use in kWh/sf-year
In addition, using Excel, generate the following charts:
Natural Gas Monthly Use (Therms)
Electrical Monthly Use (kWh)
Total Monthly (Natural Gas plus Electrical) Energy Use (kBtu)
