According to tradition St. James the Apostle, having preached in Iberia, returned to Judea and was put to death by Herod. Then his body was miraculously translated to north-west Spain for burial. Eight hundred years later, continuing the tradition, a hermit saw heavenly lights that led him to the burial place at Compostela

Why Did it Become so Popular?

  • All of Christendom wanted to visit the Apostle’s tomb

  • Wave after wave of pilgrims began to arrive in the 10th century

  • It achieved its greatest popularity in the 12th century

  • By then it has been estimated that two million pilgrims visited Santiago de Compostela every year
