Quadrilaterals
The Story of ParalleloGram and her Family
Once upon a time...
ParalleloGram and ParalleloGramps had built a wonderful marriage. They had a son named Rectangle, and Rectangle got all of the wonderful characteristics that Gram and Gramps both had – he got Gramps’ lean frame, Gram’s kind eyes, and even Gramps’ laid-back personality.
But that wasn’t all...
Along with these characteristics, Rectangle got properties that ParalleloGram and ParalleloGramps passed onto him:
1. Opposite sides are parallel (definition)
2. Opposite sides are congruent
3. Opposite angles are congruent
Rectangle became his own per-shape...
Rectangle found his own per-shape-ality and developed his own properties that made him special in addition to what Gram and Gramps passed down:
1. Consecutive sides are perpendicular (definition)
2. Opposite angles are supplementary
Along came a girl...
Rectangle got older and more mature, and he met a nice girl named Rhombus. Rhombus was a firecracker – she had properties that Rectangle had never seen before!
1. Consecutive sides are congruent (definition)
Welcome to the family!
Despite their reservations, ParalleloGram and ParalleloGramps welcomed Rhombus into their family. Lucky for Rectangle, because he and Rhombus decided to elope!! It was a whirlwind of a relationship. Upon their marriage, Rhombus got to take the family properties that Gram and Gramps had already passed down to Rectangle.
1. Opposite sides are parallel (definition)
2. Opposite sides are congruent
3. Opposite angles are congruent
4. Consecutive angles are supplementary
5. Diagonals bisect each other
Taking the next step….
Even though their relationship moved quickly, Rectangle and Rhombus had no doubts that a child was in their future. A year after they married, the couple welcome their first child into the world – Square. Square had all of the properties that embodied the relationship of his parents.
What Gram and Gramps passed on...
The properties that Gram and Gramps passed on to their son, and eventually his wife:
1. Opposite sides are parallel (definition)
2. Opposite sides are congruent
3. Opposite angles are congruent
4. Consecutive angles are supplementary
5. Diagonals bisect each other
What made Rectangle unique...
The properties that made Rectangle different from Gram and Gramps:
1. Consecutive sides are perpendicular (definition)
2. Opposite angles are supplementary
3. Consecutive angles are congruent
What made Rhombus special...
The properties Rhombus had that set her apart from Rectangle (and, in turn, Gram and Gramps):
1. Consecutive sides are congruent (definition)
What goes up must come down...
As quickly as their relationship began, it ended. Adding a child to the mix did nothing to help their quick-to-fruition relationship – it only added stress; Rhombus and Rectangle decided that it was best for Square if they separated. About the only thing the parents agreed upon when it came to raising Square was that they needed to do it separately – they would make decision together about what was best for Square, but they could not live in under the same roof (whirlwind relationship, remember?).
Square’s visits with mom...
Anytime Square would visit his mom, Rhombus could see the properties of Rectangle she quickly fell in love with without thinking.
Square’s visits with dad...
Anytime Square would visit his dad, Rectangle could see the properties of Rhombus that, while fun and exciting in the beginning of a relationship were not properties for a long-lasting marriage.
Family Get-Togethers
Family gatherings (birthdays, holidays, Super Bowl parties, etc.) were always at Gram and Gramps’ house because even though Rectangle and Rhombus couldn’t get along together, they were able to put aside their differences and find the things they had in common to make some positive family memories with Square.
Family Tree
ParalleloGram and Gramps passed their properties to Rectangle, who then shared those same properties with Rhombus when they got married. When Rectangle and Rhombus had their child, Square got the properties that Gram and Gramps originally shared with Rectangle.
Square also got all of the properties that Rectangle AND Rhombus had that made them unique, but Rectangle and Rhombus did not share any of those properties.
