What is the Importance of �Toolbox Meetings?

  • Talking to somebody to make the person understand what you intend he should do, without proper communication we will not understand one another and there will be disorder in our work site which may result into accident
  • Toolbox Meeting is the communication tool involving groups in our respective work areas
  • It makes us understand the Dos and Don’ts in the particular issue on site

Requirements

  • The Toolbox meetings are conducted everyday before start of the job.
  • All the section members must be present
  • Mention the topics of the toolbox
  • Read and explain to all the attendees
  • Cite instances where necessary
  • Ask and answer questions (if any)

Requirements

  • All the steps involve in the job must be talked about
  • The job hazards must be exposed and control measure discussed
  • Before the commencement of every job, the supervisor, foreman, or crew leader must explain to the understanding of everyone about what is supposed to be done, the required tools, hazards involved, control measures, PPE etc.
  • Attendance form has to be signed by all the participant

Responsibilities

It is the responsibility of the person that is in charge of the group to conduct Toolbox Meeting, the size of the group does not matter, it could be the:

  • Manager
  • Supervisor
  • Foreman
  • Crew leader etc.

How to Conduct Toolbox Meeting (TBM)

Discuss about the job activities

  • Mention the different jobs stages
  • Talk about the tools and materials, are they in good condition
  • Talk about the hazards involved in each of the stage
  • Mention control measures
  • Mention the PPE requirements for the task
  • Consider other job going on in the area
  • Ask and answer question to test the understanding on the members

Personal Protective Equipment

When hazards cannot be eliminated

Provide and ensure the use of:

  • Hearing protection
  • Skin protection
  • Respiratory protection
  • Fall protection
  • Fire protection
  • Eye protection etc.

Tools and Equipment Inspection

Inspect all tools and equipment.

Ensure use of the right tools for the job.

Don’t use homemade tools. Ask!

  • Is the tool right for the job?
  • Is the tool used correctly?
  • Is the tool in a safe condition?

Hazard Recognition

  • Ask- what are the hazards?
  • Are all hazards identified, reduced or totally eliminated?
  • What might go wrong in this operation?

Procedure

Every job has safe operating procedure

  • Is the procedure known by training?
  • Is the procedure adequate for the task?
  • If not, is it reviewed accordingly?
  • Is the procedure followed?
  • Is the procedure reinforced by supervisor’s good examples?
  • Always ask questions when in doubt to clarify our understanding.
