INTRO TO TANGERINE

2 of 17

WHAT IS TANGERINE?

  • Tangerine is an informal global network of young professionals working at UNFPA, which provides a space to get to know each other, collaborate professionally, and identify, plan and implement ideas that will contribute towards achieving the mandate of UNFPA.

WHO IS IT FOR?

  • Tangerine is primarily for temporary/permanent UNFPA staff of all contract categories under the age of 35. Nevertheless, Tangerine-led projects can be open to all colleagues with a fresh and open mindset.

Purpose and aims

The purpose of Tangerine is to ignite change towards our mandate, and positively influence young people’s experience and participation at UNFPA. Functioning as an open and evolving space to adopt different aims, Tangerine can be what you make out of it. To begin with, it is set-up to work as follows:

  • Think Tank: Provide a space for conceptual discussions and solutions on existing or emerging issues
  • Learning and Development Community: Create opportunities for personal and professional development
  • Hack/Innovation Space: Generate ideas and implement projects that create value
  • Social Hub and Internal Community: Getting to know each other and increased cross-organizational collaboration

PRINCIPLES

Independent Tangerine members participate in their own capacity as a young person working at UNFPA, not as a representative of their role/division.

Horizontal and Decentralised There is no hierarchy between members - everyone is free to pitch/begin an initiative that they believe will create value.

Teamwork Tangerine is about collaborating to make things better - ie - working in teams from an early stage, pro-actively seeking diverse perspectives to strengthen initiatives, and giving credit where it’s due.

Radically transparent Tangerine is fully transparent in its working methods and decision mechanisms. Information and ideas are openly shared, and questions encouraged. Actions are data and consensus driven.

AGILE The work approach is flexible and adaptable. The set-up of the community itself, and its projects, need to be responsive to learning along the way, and emerging needs and issues.

SAFE SPACE Respect and inclusivity are underlying principles of Tangerine. It is a space for members to express their opinions freely, and be open to all voices, irrespective of position or identity.

DIY (“Do it yourself”) Tangerine is an action-oriented platform to “make things happen” rather than discuss them in abstract and wait for others to do things. Every member, and team, is responsible for working towards what they want to achieve.

FAIL FORWARD Tangerine operates with constructive feedback as a habit - both giving and listening. It adopts a growth perspective to deal with failures in a healthy way, support each other, and move forward together.

RESPONSIBLE Every Tangerine member and/or team is responsible and accountable for delivering on their chosen commitments, and carrying the Tangerine name considerately and thoughtfully, both within the community, and externally.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Tangerine works through the use of four different work modes aimed at different outcomes, and one common platform for suggestions/communication (Slack).
  • Using these core elements, any individual or group at any UNFPA office can create their own projects/events that fall under the umbrella of Tangerine.
