Why to start the project?

In Japan, Wikipedia is very popular, but other projects are not as well-known as Wikipedia.

We are planning to hold some outreach events, and chose to attend the Open Source Conference in Japan to showcase the Wikimedia Projects at a glance and holding lectures about the Wikimedia Projects and the Wikimedia movement.

We exhibited for the first time at OSC, which took place in Nagoya in May 2024. During the event, we held a seminar to introduce Wikimedia projects as a whole. However it was a challenge to cover all the projects in just 45 minutes. Therefore I decided it would be more effective to focus on one specific project.

We learned at the booth…

While talking with visitors at our booth, we learned the following:

  • Engineers who visit OSC are interested in databases.
  • Several people I spoke to told me that they have used generative AI to convert Wikipedia articles into database formats.

Because of these reasons, I have decided that the next time I have an opportunity, I will hold a seminar introducing Wikidata.

The second OSC was held at Kyoto in July 2024, I planned the seminar of introducing Wikidata.

The seminar was so well received that we decided to hold a Wikidata seminar at subsequent OSCs.

Improve the action at the booth

At the booth, I explained things verbally and by showing the actual Wiki screen, but I asked the members of the User Group to create a brochure so that people could see at a glance what kinds of projects exist at Wikimedia. That made it easier to explain things to people who visited the booth.

As the event continues, OSC lead Mr. Miyahara suggested holding a mini event within the OSC.

Thanks to the efforts of the User Group members and those who cooperated with the group's activities, we were able to hold the "Japan Wikimedia Conference 2025.“

Held mini-conf in OSC

Moku-moku-kai(もくもく会) is the name of offline events similar of editathons, where participants teach each other while completing their tasks. It goes beyond writing Wikipedia articles, and also includes adding diffs and other projects. By organizing it before or after OSC, participants and exhibitors can interact more in-depth, rather than simply gathering in person for OSC.

Summary and for next

CC by SA 4.0, VZP10224

  • Our group had just started and was not well known, not able to attract people among Wiki editors. So participating in OSC made us reach more people than we thought.
  • By continuing to participate, our group has gradually gained recognition.
  • If there are any examples of OSS applications being created using Wikidata, we would like to announce them in the future.
