Japanese wolf

  • an extinct subspecies of wolf, endemic to the islands of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, the Japanese archipelago. One of the two subspecies of wolves in the Japanese archipelago.

Why did it die out?

  • The reason was an epidemic of rabies among wolves, as a result of which attacks on people and domestic animals became more frequent. The last Japanese wolf was killed on January 23, 1905 in the village of Hidashi-Yoshino in Nara Prefecture.

WHAT HE LOOKED LIKE?

The Japanese wolf was smaller in size compared to other wolves of the Asian and North American continents. At the withers, he reached 56-58 cm. He has short legs and thin hair.
