INTRO TO LEASE PLANS

  • The Library subscribes to three annual Lease Plans from Baker & Taylor: Adult Books, Children’s and Teen books, and DVDs.
  • Each Lease Plan has an annual quota, and books and DVDs are selected on a monthly basis.
  • Titles are returned to Baker & Taylor when no longer needed. These returned titles do not affect the annual quota.
  • We can add quota at any time to the plans for an additional fee.
  • Items arrive partially processed, so we can send them out to circulate very quickly.

WHY LUCKY DAY?

  • La Grange staff purchased only one copy of each title.
  • The Collection Services Associate ran a high demand holds list each week, and bought an additional copy ONLY if a title had four La Grange patron holds.
  • New materials immediately went out on hold to other SWAN libraries, so we were not meeting La Grange patrons’ needs.
  • We researched nearby libraries with successful lease plans, such as Brookfield.

BOOKS

  • In October 2012, we launched the adult books Lease Plan with Baker & Taylor, which we called Lucky Day.
  • These books were non-holdable, so if you saw it on the shelf, it was your Lucky Day! We started with a quota of 120 (10/month) and increased it to 240 (20/month) in October 2014.
  • In January 2013, we launched the children’s and teens (CATS) Lease Plan with 10/month, which was increased to 20/month in January 2018.

DVDS

  • In September 2013, we launched the DVD Lease Plan of 20 DVDs/month. This quota was increased to 25 DVDs/month in February 2018.
  • We became Collection HQ subscribers in July 2017. Baker & Taylor offered a 50% content credit as first-year subscribers, 25% content credit as second-year, and 10% content credit as third-year subscribers. We applied the content credit toward the DVD Lease Plan.
  • New high-demand DVDs not purchased on the Lease Plan from Baker & Taylor have a 7-day loan. After 3 months they circulate for 3 weeks like regular DVDs.

VIDEO GAMES

  • We do not purchase video games through a lease plan, but the first 3 months of circulating, video games receive a Lucky Day sticker and Lucky Day A/V item type. After 3 months, they circulate like regular video games.

STRATEGIC PLAN 2017-19

In 2016, library staff and trustees worked with a consultant to conduct a patron survey and create a new Strategic Plan for 2017-19. Three objectives are related to collection development:

  • Services 1.2 - Meet patron demand and library staff requirements for electronic information and related technologies in appropriate formats, quantity, and manner to instruction.
  • Spaces 4.1 - Annually assess the facility and use of space to ensure it is well-maintained and optimized.
  • Spaces 4.2 - Annually incorporate into the Collection Development Plan a collection assessment that encourages browsing, ensures accessibility, and has appropriate space allocation.
