We’ll discuss how to make faith formation age appropriate. (I’ll be talking mainly about households with children 8^th grade and below but these tips can be used for all households)

Think about your own household, the ages and life stages of everyone in your family.
Think about ways your congregation could help you in faith formation.

Church worker lens, think about how you could use this information in your OWN HOME and how you could equip households in your congregation.

You must know it for your own family
Be an example and help answer your members’ questions
I believe this is one of the most important things I can do in my ministry. Equipping heads of households, to disciple your children in the faith will have an eternal impact in your lives, your children’s lives, and the lives of many generations to come.

We’re going to take a brief look at each of the four main pillars of faith-formation in the home and the simple steps towards implementing them for your family.
Throughout this session we’ll dig deeper into each of the components, Family Devotions, Bible Reading, Prayer, and Faith-Filled Conversations

Each of these is a step towards helping your household grow in the faith.
Don’t need to happen in any specific order. They all go hand-in-hand.
A good family devotion will incorporate some Bible reading and prayer within it and hopefully spark some faith-filled conversations!

A Couple Definitions (How I will be using these words today)

“Home” means anytime you are with your family (not just the physical home, but that will be the place you have the most influence, you create the rhythms and habits there that influence the rest of your life as you are on mission outside of the physical house).

“Family” means household (anyone in your household who you have a responsibility towards and who you see daily, not just a home with young children. Although it is valuable to create habits of faith formation as early as possible.)

The Altar is the center of worship

Literally means: “An elevated place or structure before which religious ceremonies may be enacted or upon which sacrifices may be offered.”
Your family “altar” could be a literal place but it’s more figurative for the intentional time your family spends on each of these activates.
The altar is the place you receive gifts from God.
All four of these main areas work together to create a well-rounded faith formation practice. We receive God’s gifts through each area.
It takes sacrifices (your time, sometimes your emotions, your commitment) but these practices will richly bless your family.

The Biblical Model

This is just to quickly explain the paradigm I’m speaking from.
Coined by (and art by) Ben Freudenburg, Concordia Center for the Family.
This ministry approach is something that the MO District and Synod in general, are working towards.
Difficult to translate this paradigm in the church.
I always add the phrase “faith-formation”. This helps us understand the focus on the paradigm.
Faith formation happens primarily in the home and I’m going to cover the four main components of it.

Each household has the God-given primary responsibility of faith formation

God created two primary institutions for shaping Christian thought and life

The Christian Family
And the Christian Church

God uses both institutions, in their unique roles, to achieve His primary objective for all people to be part of the family of God and members of the Universal Church

2 institution but 1 goal

The family and church are both part of God’s design.
The Christian home whose members are filled with faith are already in the Universal Church. They are the Church and members of the Family of God.
The Christian home then is under the authority of the church.
Both the home and the church serve as unique tools to reach Christ’s Primary Objective.

Faith-Formation

Through biblical education, prayer, and a focus on God’s plan for life, the Holy Spirit will work faith in adults and children in each household.

Home-Centered

Households/families are the primary area where worldview & belief (religious, political, social, etc.) formation occurs.

Church-Supported

The role of the Church is to equip heads of households and support them as they guide and instruct the members of their households.

This often takes establishing a new church culture within your congregation—Home Centered - Church Supported.
This philosophy deliberately develops a partnership between the church and the home in faith and family life formation.
This philosophy is not the mainstream in culture, media, or (unfortunately sometimes) the church today because it puts parents as primary (instead of who others perceive as the “experts”).
Really, parents are the “experts” for their own children! But they still need the partnership of the church to provide support, resources, and education for their own faith development and for the ways they can influence their children.

Faith is given by the Holy Spirit, and we receive His gifts of forgiveness, life, and salvation through the sacraments. But that faith is grown and matured through faith-formation.

Intellectually we understand that faith is more than knowledge and good morals. We certainly desire for those we lead to possess a robust faith that impacts every aspect of life, and we hunger to see faith that transcends childhood belief into lifelong faith…. It is about understanding how to live out what we believe by the power of the Holy Spirit. Genuine faith is established when someone has a firm conviction.

The last thing before we go into the 4 steps

That influence can be positive, or it could be negative, think about it but remember that God is a gracious, forgiving, and loving.

Example from My Life:

I am so thankful for my education and experiences in adult life
but honestly, most of what I’ve learned/my firm convictions come from my personal experience growing up in a household that valued faith formation.
My parents instilled a deep love for God and His Word, they taught by example, they used the resources they had, and we had many conversations.
Now I’m learning how to do faith formation as an adult, a church worker, a wife, and a mother!
With my husband who grew up in a faithful family as well.
We get to combine what we’ve learned from our different families of origin

THINK ABOUT THIS:

Think about the nuclear family you grew up in.

The members, the age differences, schedule

Now think about the faith formation/discipleship

your parents’ faith maturity
The way they talked about faith
Church attendance

Think about a specific faith-formation area that you have struggled with or that you’d like to improve in your own home.

What do Home Devotions Look Like?

Intentional time to grow in the faith.
Age-appropriate conversations.
Family routines/rhythms.
Prewritten readings and/or creative activities.
Discussions about God’s will & His promises for us (Law and Gospel).
Appling the Bible to everyday situations.

Devotion literally means an act of devotion or a dedicated practice.
When we dedicate intentional time outside of church towards studying God’s Word, His will for our lives, what He wants us to do, and what He’s done for us, we’re continuing to strengthen our defenses against temptation, apathy, and doubt.

Could be done, anytime, anywhere. Daily, each night before bed, during breakfast, in the car.

I love the idea of family rhythms. In his book, “Habits of the Household” Justin Whitmel Earley writes about the idea of family rhythms. While routines stick to a specific timeline (we always eat supper at 5:30, do a family devotion at 8:00 and put the kids to bed at 8:30), rhythms follow a predictable pattern (we try to say a prayer before each meal and do a family devotion before we go to bed).
Find the rhythm that works best with your family.

Could use a simple prewritten format – Prewritten book, Portals of Prayer, Sunday School take-home, Sermon notes, children’s devotion, the Catechism

Some people get creative and do their own, but I’ve seen that most families prefer to keep it simple!

Family Devotion Elements

INVOCATION

“In the Name of the Father, Son, & Holy Spirit” (make the sign of the cross)

PRAYER

Say the Lord’s Prayer, a memorized or prewritten prayer, or make up your own.

Devotion book, story Bible, or deeper reading of a Scripture passage or the Catechism.

READING

The Apostles’ Creed is a simple confession of faith. Consider saying the 10 Commandments.

CREED

The four, simple elements are encouraged by Luther in the catechism (pg. 30) and can form a daily habit or rhythm.

Can be components of a longer devotion time or a quick family blessing in the morning to mark the transition before the beginning of the day.

Short liturgies for daily prayer in the hymnal (start pg. 295). (My family used the morning prayer for indiv. and families every day).

Simple Elements

Invocation: brings attention and focus together. Signals the start of devotion time or the end of your “mindful moment”. Pause before the next thing (start of the day or bedtime)

The sign of the cross is to remember baptism.
Family Blessing. Make the sign of the cross on each other’s foreheads and say your own blessing or a prewritten one
Aaronic “May the Lord bless you and keep you…”
Make up your own “repeat after me”

Prayer: The Lord’s Prayer, Daily prayers (in the Catechism or on the Portals of Prayer app!), more on other types of prayer later.
Creed: confess the faith, speak the commandments, the core of our beliefs
Reading: Most flexible for time and age of children, Portals of Prayer, Little Visits with God, Story Bibles, daily Bible reading, many apps or devotional emails
Song: It helps us to remember what we hear! Sing a hymn, the doxology, I am Jesus Little Lamb, Bible verses set to music (esp. good with younger children).

Family Devotions with All Ages

Do devotions of some kind with the entire family.
Devotions or deeper Bible Study with one parent.
Competition or other motivations help.
Try to build intrinsic motivation.
Check for retention & comprehension.
Challenge youth to consider deeper theological concepts (connect to the Catechism.)

Can work with any age or season of life:

There aren’t really rules for what works best at specific ages.
Younger children can handle more than you think and older children can benefit from a simple devotion too.
Teaching them these key words will work at any age.
Read a story in simple language from a story book Bible, then ask questions. Many devotions or story Bibles will have pre-written questions.

Many families struggle to do devotions with multiple ages together and especially with youth.

Sometimes you could do them with one parent (ex. Mom and Daughter)
No one is completely intrinsically motivated but that’s especially true of teenagers.
Sometimes competition or reward systems help! Food, fun activity, exercise, you as the parent struggling too.
Often you can tie your conversations about simple devotions into what youth are learning/have learned in Confirmation classes.
They need a challenge.
Consider asking older kids to lead parts of it or to think more deeply.

Many studies show that youth who remain active Christians into adulthood were able to ask difficult questions, express doubt, and talk with a parent or trusted mentor about faith and life.

The Bible you use needs to be as accurate to the Scriptures as possible {meaning it doesn’t compromise the Gospel or use vague terms for sin, salvation and Christ’s death and resurrection}

Here are some of the things I look for when choosing a story Bible. I consider:

the age of the child
the table of contents/page numbers
actual verses references
discussion questions
Prayers
which stories they include
the art style (I prefer more realistic, but a variety of different books can help with this)
If the content is more focused on moral teachings and allegories or on pointing to Jesus (a Christological focus)

Littles Can Learn Too!

They retain so much information from the formative years.
Sing with them.
Engage their senses.
Make it a priority and routine.

Teach Scripture to your babies and toddlers.
Don’t feel like your kids have to be a certain age before they learn! They can retain so much just by having the Bible read to them or sung to them with Scripture songs. Here are four tips for teaching Scripture to your baby or toddler!
Newborns and very young children excel on high contrast
Make it so much part of their lives that they ask for Bible stories, they beg to read the Bible again, and they correct you on biblical facts. Even as toddlers!

Pick a verse to memorize together, say it multiple times daily and differently.
Write verses and use them as number, spelling, and hand-writing practice.
Start teaching more specific words and their meanings: “faith”, “hope”, “sin”.

Use simple techniques for copywork, memorization and understanding once your kids are more familiar with the basics of the Bible.
Here are some specific ideas:
If your children are older than age four, start looking for some key words in your Bible reading time that you can explain to them. This might be something like looking for the words “faith” or “hope” as you read the New Testament letters and telling them a little more about what that means.
Pick a few Bible verses to teach your toddler or preschooler on a special topic and say it a couple of times each day using fun voices and silly actions.

Continue building on the other methods you’ve used in the past
Memorize longer passages
Learn the context behind key verses
Teach theological concepts not just stories
Teach the Christological significance of the Bible. Everything the Bible points to Christ!

Some kids will have deeper questions than others! Go at their pace but be sure to give them a challenge. The Bible is not just a book of fairytales for little kids. It contains the history of mankind,

Begin to learn the Bible with your children

A great place to start is with the Gospel of John
The Scripture writer (God is the ultimate author) emphasizes the plan of God’s salvation as found in Jesus Christ throughout the book. The first chapter and first few verses of John introduces God’s plan for man even before creation in Genesis and goes from there.
Read through this book with your children during your family devotional time or just anytime. The Proverbs or Psalms are also excellent places to start!

Bible Reading & Devotions for Youth

Ask questions that promote critical thinking.
Focus on deeper theological topics.
Relate readings to what’s going on in their lives.
Ask them to imagine they were in the story; how would they react?
Help them think about why God included that story or passage in the Bible, what He wants us to learn.
Ask them to pick the topic or read out loud.
Check for retention & comprehension.

The Bible should be part of your daily life.
There are many ways to incorporate God’s Word into your daily life. Obviously, the most important and simplest is to sit down and read the Bible on your own.

Outloud: God’s Word was meant to be spoken aloud. His Word is living and active and meant to be read out loud!
Skit: For a family event last summer, I spent about 25 min. prepping the a devotion. I gathered costumes, snacks, and a few kids to act out the feeding of the 5,000.

The Bible truly is more fascinating than any other book or any show. You can use it as a source of entertainment! Make the Bible something that excites and educates all five senses!

The truth is, most Christians are busy with other things: the day-to-day of normal life-jobs, kids, budgets, sports, weather and what’s premiering on Netflix this week. None of this is bad, but the unfortunate reality is that most adults don’t seem to connect their everyday experiences with their faith. Or, at least, they aren’t talking about it as they do.

If you’re interested in learning more about faith-filled/spiritual conversations in today’s culture, you can read more about it in this study from:

Barna and Lutheran Hour Ministries released a study in 2018 about spiritual conversations
They found that very few Americans, even Christians, talk about faith regularly.

(¾ of Christians have spiritual conversations less than once a month.)

Their focus was primarily on evangelism
As a parent/head of your household, it’s your responsibility to witness/evangelize to your own home first! Build up your household

Only 8% of all Americans talk about God, faith, religion, or spirituality once a week.

Why? Secularism, relativism, pluralism, the fear of offense, & the digital age.

Secularism “Christianity no longer functions with the cultural authority it held in times past.” (pg. 8) Post-Christian Skepticism toward the Bible and Christianity.
Relativism “You do you…. Who am I to judge what you do with your life…. Only 35% of Americans agree that moral truth is absolute (44% say it’s relative; 21% admit to never having thought about it).” (pg. 9)

This is the God-given directive for families

Memorize this verse!
This is the God-given command and duty of parents. It sounds a little tough and law based because it is! But, God will help and forgive.

Faith formation “at-home” just means anytime you are with your child. All times of the day, all locations, all situations can be used to direct your attention towards God.

Literally every situation could be a learning moment (this can get very overwhelming but let it be a encouragement that you don’t have to wait for the “right” time or place).

Your family devotions don’t have to look like your whole family sitting on the couch at 6am cuddled up and quietly listening to a bible story.

Faith formation happens best when it is woven into the everyday interactions with your family members.
Children learn best from repetition. Do all of these things often, daily, routinely! Make it the habit and the expectation.

He established a testimony in Jacob� and appointed a law in Israel,�which he commanded our fathers� to teach to their children,

⁶that the next generation might know them,� the children yet unborn,�and arise and tell them to their children,�⁷ so that they should set their hope in God�and not forget the works of God,� but keep his commandments.

The most important task that faces a father and mother is not the obvious physical childcare and support. Their major job, starting with the first day, is to provide their child with constant, accepting love. That kind of love has only one source: God.

Keeping it Simple

Pick one area to focus on for a week.
Just pick one family devotion at a time.
Make the most of your time.
Create a routine that you don’t have to think about.
You don’t need to be creative.
Find what works for your family.
God has commanded this; He will bless it!

This is also called the KISS method ;) (Keep it Simple Stupid)

If you have kids of multiple ages, try going through an adult devotion book for a while then ask questions that help it apply to kids of multiple ages.

Sometimes it’s more important to just do something. You don’t always have to read the devotion that is the most age appropriate for your children.

You can use almost anything for devotions! You don’t need to reinvent the wheel (beg borrow and steal) (hymnal, portals of prayer, the Bible, prewritten devotion books)
Find what work
Each week during the parenting class I teach on Wednesday nights, parents each answer the question “How have you intentionally guided your household in faith at home this week?”
The cool thing about the way God created the home-centered, church-supported approach is that you get to find what works best for YOUR family.

God has commanded this and He will bless it!
Be intentional. Satan wants this to be hard! He wants you to NOT do devotions.
From a family psychology standpoint, these intentional times together can help build family trust, togetherness, reciprocity, and a sense of wellbeing and identity.

This serves as the very first catechism you can show your children.
It’s more of a picture book style with very simple explanations in the order of the traditional catechism.

Luther’s Small Catechism for Kids

This contains the contents of Luther’s Small Catechism with colorful illustrations and icons.
The terms and language of the explanations have been adapted for elementary aged kids.

My First Hymnal

This little, beautiful hymnal contains simple liturgies, prayer, psalms, and hymns.
Some families use it to give them a daily structure for their family devotions.
(I’ve used it while babysitting and the kids loved it as part of their bedtime routine!)
