Hopefully you have the opportunity to read the parent email each week as we let you know the maths topic, reading strategy, sound of the week and what we will be covering in the next week.

Curriculum

Possibly when you were at school everything was corrected. Red crosses everywhere. Times have changed.

We don’t focus on every mistake – demoralising and too much for a student to learn. Instead we correct what we have explicitly taught. Eg capital letters.

More emphasis is on students revising their own work and one on one conferences with the teacher.

Correcting is only meaningful if you are discussing the changes/mistakes with the student. Very few students look at corrected work that you haven’t discussed with them and go ‘oh this is where I made the mistake’.

Homework

Reading: Minimum of 4 times per week for 20 minutes. Students to write the title in their diary and number of pages they read. Parents to initial child’s reading, once for the week.

Comprehension/Word Study/General Knowledge:

activity sheet/projects.

Maths - multiplication tables, revision�All homework is due on Thursdays.

Absences

Thank you for letting the class teacher know if your child is absent but please also place the absence on Compass. That way you won’t receive one of those please explain notices from the office.

Interschool Sport

A little bit different this year. Rather than playing against a school each week for 4 weeks, we are playing the schools all on one day.

It is called a Gala Day and it is on Friday 14th March.

We are waiting for a few more details from Schools Sport Victoria and we will forward this information to you.

Secondary School Open Nights

It is not too early for Year 5 parents to attend Open Nights this year, in fact we highly recommend it.

at the start of Term 2.

- This pack contains the Application for Year 7 Placement 2026.

- Update your personal details on Compass before the end of Term 1.

Completing the Application

Designated Neighbourhood School - https://www.findmyschool.vic.gov.au/ �Most (not all) families tend to have ‘Melba College’ as their designated neighbourhood school.
Please use the 3 preference system - especially if you are applying outside of your zone.
Norwood SC / Ringwood SC - if you want either of these, make sure it’s your first preference!
Preference is always given to families within the secondary school’s zone.

Year 6 - Year 7 Transition

Complete the Application form and return to YRPS by Friday 9th May 2025.

You will receive notification of your child's Year 7 placement in a government secondary school on Tuesday 1st July 2025.

All government secondary schools will host a Year 7 Orientation Day (for Year 6 students) on Tuesday 9th December.

Year 6 Graduation

Graduation is on Thursday, 18th Dec at the Chirnside Country Club.

For graduation to occur we need to fundraise and we need parents to volunteer their services. Further information as the year progresses.

There will be a full day excursion for Year 6 at MSAC.
