Learning to see: using 10 x 2 protocol

First, observe the piece and write 10 things that you see in the work. Do not interpret. Make simple observations.

Example:

  • There is a man
  • He is holding something that looks like a sandwich
  • Both of his hands are near his mouth

Non-example (interpretation):

  • There is a man eating a sandwich

Learning to see: using 10 x 2

  • The brain is hardwired to create meaning from visual cues
  • Artists want to portray certain ideas, moods, or images
  • Artists have to include visual cues
    • First: see the patterns/cues
    • Second: know how to render the cues
    • Third: master the media so you can depict what you wish
