What I Learned About Student Engagement and Online Learning
Simple Strategy:
Instead of a video or presentation, teach using a game from www.educandy.com or by assigning a game at quizziz.com or a “blind Kahoot” to teach terms.
In the Chat: What is 1 thing you are doing that is working? What is 1 thing you would like to change?
Discovery and Choice Boards
Quick Strategy:
Use Padlet to create a Discovery Board and let students choose 1-2 resources to review and share.
Choice Boards (Example 1)
Quick Strategy:
Student Choice Boards - Type in “choice board” and either “template” or “your topic” for a quick start. There are TONS of ready-made ones out there!
Pick a Role Choice Board
Quick Strategy:
Provide a choice board with ROLES that might appeal to the students. Even just changing the Guiding Question will have students interested in learning more! :)
In the Chat:
How could (or do) you use Choice Boards?
Hyperdocs
HyperDoc is a term used to describe a Google Doc that contains an innovative lesson for students- a 21st Century worksheet, but much better. ... With one shortened link, students can access a lesson that contains instructions, links, tasks, and many clever ways to get kids thinking.
Want to try it? Here is a resource for K-12 templates and Examples:

Tune and Advertise Your Topics
Quick Strategy
When naming your topic, think about what would appeal to your students.
Example:
Quick Strategy
How to advertise a topic? Announcements, Images (either found or made with a tool like Canva), and Remind are all great ways to preview a topic. My favorite (shown) is the Movie Poster template in Canva.

Have a Little Media Fun
Here is a Class Hook I am using next week for Natural Selection:
In the Chat:
Do your students use social media? If so, which one(s)?
Quick Strategy:
Use a social media format to instruct, or let students create an online or offline version as an assignment or use Class Hook to add a movie clip!
Thinking About Student Engagement
In education, student engagement refers to the degree of attention, curiosity, interest, optimism, and passion that students show when they are learning or being taught, which extends to the level of motivation they have to learn and progress in their education. (from edglossary.org)
Food For Thought:
Identify students who are not engaged in your online class and ask questions to determine which level(s) are working/not working and focus there first.
Tools: Surveys, Conversations, Reflection
In the Chat: Do you feel like engagement is high/low? Did you hear about a tool you might use next week?
