Charles Ozuk
Chicago Daily Tribune
Charles Ozuk, a member of an immigrant family with six children in Chicago during the Depression, joined the Air Corps so that he could help his family by sending money home.

Chicago led the country in war production, with factories producing war-related goods, and military training facilities which prepared hundreds of thousands of soldiers. Women went to work in defense plants and the population boomed to over three and a half million, with those who traveled from all over the country for work in the defense plants. Even children participated in the war effort: they bought 25 cent savings stamps and brought foil and kitchen fat to their classrooms during scrap drives. Consumer goods were scarce and rationed.
